The lady is old remember... give her a break.  Show some compassion with your honesty. Now if a young girl asks me to honestly rate her 1-10 because she really wants to know what I think.  Then I will honestly rate her.  (unless im trying to get a pice of ass )

How often does an old lady ask you what she looks like? She already knows.

You must learn to recognize humor.

"Newborn babies do not wear masks"

Newborn babies are completely selfish creatures, they dont even make a disticntion between you and them to them you are just a part of them that feeds them, to them the entire world is an extension of themselves for their needs only.

as for being honest sure if your wife is a complete bitch then you should get divorced, its better for both of you shes probably as miserable with you as you with her. if shes not then telling her shes great would be the truth - get a great wife.

if your boss is an arsehole your probably better of in another job.
get a better boss so you can tell him the truth.

as for old ladies well they may not be sexually attractive, but they are not ugly, beauty is not superficial, and if shes ninety and she still thinks shes hot then shes got vanity issues, and telling her she is ugly is doing her a favour.

but if u go up to people just to tell them bad things then you have a problem.

sometimes being nice isnt for the best sometimes people need to hear the truth, and that sometimes is more often than not.

True story:

I meet this very fit, drunk lady at a night club. She is proud of her athletic figure so she asks me how old I think she is. I look her up and down and decide to be completely honest so I say 43. She goes into a rage and starts spitting venom almost completely flipping out.

Unfazed I ask "Well, just how old are you?"

She red-facedly replies "43."

The proof is in the pudding.

Whats with the analogy to babies acting as a return to authentism?

Does that mean the next time I have gas pains I should wail my bloody head off at ear piercing octaves?

Does that mean the next time I get served food I don't like, I should throw it on the floor in disdain?

Does that mean the next time I can't sleep at 3:00 A.M. I should wake everyone up to entertain me?

Let me tell ya something, babies are the most selfish beings on the planet. if thats being authentic, I'll take a mask please. What else ya got in your closet swami?

Babys may be selfish but they are authenticly selfish. When they wail and cry that is there only way of telling you they feel pain.

When they throw food on the floor... it is there only way of telling you they dont like it. Not because they are trying to be rude or crazy.

Being grown we know better ways to communicate our feelings, babys dont.

Babys keep it real.

Okay swami,

Do you have a funny man mask for Buddah here in your closet?

This thread lost any semblance of realness quite a while back.

(P.S. Buddah, I have a little girl, I know how real they keep it and why- we are having fun here)

I think the point that is being made is that babies express themselves at all times. This a good model to follow as babies don't torture themselves with guilt, lie to others, or be anything other than completely honest. That is not to say that you should scream bloody hell at the drop of a hat, but express yourself honestly and naturally. Another thing about babies is that they are very resilient.

The humor is in picturing an adult being as authentically real as a baby.

Any restraint or self control an adult uses not to behave that way is a mask.

I DOOOOOOOOO understand the analogy though.

When I watch my daughter jump and twirl walking down the side walk and bust a move and sing while waiting in line at the grocery store, I often ask my husband, "Why can't adults feel free to do that?" It would be so cool

I have come to the conclusion that many people would rather be lied to so as to assuage their egos than to face the truths which they find uncomfortable. I have 'insulted' many a person by speaking my mind, though the intent was just to express my perceptions truthfully. I find little need to keep track of lies told only to spare self deluded souls an honest expression - I call 'em as I see 'em (unless I need to get laid).

--------------------
To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Omission is not equivalent with a false front.

Sparing feelings with a lack of a negative comment is not the same as kissing someone's ass just to make them feel better (when they really don't need it).

It's a bootstrap method - not a behavioral calculus carved in stone. There's really too much flexibility to argue against it.

I get it.

Masks and Authenticity the Problem of Adulthood [Re: Sclorch]
    #3323019 -

what ever you put out there is your mask
once it is out there it is as indistiguishable from any other as far as authenticity goes.

the important thing to recognize is that no mask is donned alone, usually it is part of a learned sequence (associations) and always it imposes input filters, be it is shaped eyeholes (looking for some particular reaction), hand seeking door handle- whatever, etc.

When a series of masks is played, a stack of association contexts and reaction contexts arises as well. This slowly fading chain of "relevance" and "seeking" adds to the convincingness of the ego movie.

personality is such a rich thing.

questioning the authenticity of the masks is one thing that a baby would not do, it is one of the mature dissociations that is possible without any drugs.

that whole thing about calling the old lady ugly is not about being any "real-er"; instead it is connected to the dissociation problems, and to when people "doubt" themselves and then act out.

Yep. I've tried honesty, but it doesn't work. People become angry over honesty. And defensive.

There was this guy in our office who was pulling stuff in order to make money. He was also lying about stuff. He was kicked out by the guy who owns the lease because of his antics.

I cannot tell him exactly why he is getting kicked out because he will become defensive, he will lie, and he will try to manipulate the situation.

So, I put on a mask and I'm polite to him when he comes in to pick up his things. I don't come right out and tell him what I think of him and how we all know what he's up to. I have to pretend that he's a great, but misumderstood, person. Otherwise, I have to listen to his bullcrap.
