Ive done alot of reasearch now, but i still need some advice.
Iv'e gotten everything i need to grow, but if someone could help me out on one thing....
Ive gotten a syringe of "Golden Teachers" spores, and i was wondering if they are hard to grow. Do they need cold shocking? Any special care? Please reply...thank you

GT is just like any other cubensis strain. No "special" care needed; just regular care and proper sterilization techniques. Also, no strain requires cold shocking, but it's always a good idea for greater yield.

do they need coldshocking? no. but if you do what's been advised, you'll get great results.
Just a picture of Golden Teacher cake.

Holy crap, that is alot of shrooms on that cake. Im using BRF, Vermiculite for cakes, and ive got an air pump, and fish tank heater for the chamber, should that work out well???

P.S. would you mind sharing some techniques for getting a yield like that?

I tried the dunk (cold water) and roll technique this time around and I can honestly say it significantly increased the yield for me. I was having a hard time keeping the cakes from drying out. The extra verm layer seems to really help.

Lots of tender love, that's the secret. Really, I'm trying different experiments to see what yields the best. I'll post the results eventually... Some cakes are doing better.(bigger fruits and more overall weight) but not as purty as that one. The cake you see is strictly ideal conditions. First Max Fruiting formula, then incubation at 84F, coldshock/dunk 20 hours, double end casing, always moist verm on top and bottom, fruiting at 75F with 12hours of light each day throughout fruiting. I did was meet the ideal conditions the whole way. Good luck Sam

Hi Sam,
Wow what a cake man! The first syringe I ordered is... GT!
But you just posted that rolling will have better yield then double case.. Explain?
What is that mysterious Max Fruiting Formula?
Thanks, MF

Max fruiting formula is kinda old IMO. But it still works great.
1/2 cup verm 1/4 cup BRF 60cc water
In the original PF tek, all the water needed to grow mushrooms came from the water you put in the substrate mixture and whatever water the myc was able to get from humid atmosphere(not very much). Since most water came from the cake, the expected yield was very low(I think it says 3-5 decent sized per cake). This is no longer true because we provide an external source of water. This is why casing will yield more in general. The water delivery is the key.
Double ended casing provides replenishable water source on top and bottom. I think the Original Tek that mentions it says wet it between the flushes. But, of course, we mist it to keep it nearly saturated all the time, now.
Rolling will give you replenishable water source all around. It's kind of tricky to mist well all around once the pins form, but even if you don't mist the sides, the moist verm will still provide good amount of water to myc to boost the yield.
Basically, casing have unlimited water supply, so the yield is based on myc health and amount nutrients. The experiments I'm doing will hopefully close that gap between casings and cakes(I love cakes). But I'll tell you more about them in the future as I complete my experiments...
For now, the best advice I can give you is to stick with what works. Max fruiting formula, 84F incubation, 75F fruiting, dunk/coldshock/roll.
Good luck.

Sam where do you intend on putting your experiment, in the grow log forum?

Allo Allo Sam,
That sounds about like the PF Tek, the quantities BRF and verm I mean.
Very nice those investigations of yours! I def. want to grow some cakes, but the grainbased casing methods I like them as well, so will be giving that a shot too!
Thanks again.. (ow is getting boring but u are very helpfull)

Dunking/Cold shock/Rolling:
To dunk you will open your jar, and using a sterile tool, scrape off the dry verm layer being careful to not hurt the mycelium network below.
After you have removed the dry verm layer, dump some clean water (distilled/bottled spring/clean tap) into your jars until there is enough to fully submerge your cake, I usually fill it up until there's about 1/4" from the top of the jar left.
I sterilize a sewing needle and stick it in the center of my cake and then put the lid back on the jar. The needle will ensure that your cake is completely submerged in water.
Put the jar with the submerged cake in the fridge for 24 hours.
... insert 24 hours here ...
Ok, now it's been 24 hours and we're taking the jar out of the fridge.
Dump some dry vermiculite on a baking pan and pre-heat your oven to 250 degrees. After the oven has hit 250, put the pan with the verm in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove verm pan and allow to return to room temperature (only takes a minute usually).
Now, take the lid off your jar and carefully empty out all the water. Remove the cake from the jar and carefully roll it through the dry verm in the pan.
After your cake is nice and covered with dry vermiculite use a spray bottle to moisten the vermiculite being careful not to over-saturate. Once all the vermiculite looks wet, place the cake in your fruiting chamber and wah-lah, you have just dunked, cold shocked, and rolled your cake, improving your yield
