Looking for edibles...
    #3300477 - 10/31/04 09:06 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Hi!

I have never growed edible mushrooms, and are looking for spores,
I only have Cubensis - Pink Buffalo for trading. But if anyone could help me with
some spores, I would be very greatful. I live in Norway, and of course I will pay for
shipping.

I am looking for reishi and some easy edibles. PM me if possible.

Thanks,
Ysr

Hi,

I have Reishi, Shitake and a very aggressive strain of Pleurotus pulmonarius on agar plates. I would be willing to send them to you for a trade of whatever you have. I am particularly interesting in getting some Lion's Mane or Hen of the Woods, but I'm just rebuilding my collection again so I'll take anything you can provide.

Jon

Pleurotus pulmonarius (Pheonix Oyster)
Letinula edodes (Shitake)
Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi)

Want for trade:
Other edibles . . .

Go to your local grocer and get one crimini mushroom for $0.05,clone it and inoc some bulk. Voila! Portabellos!
-------snip-------
Agaricus bisporus has increased in popularity in North America with the introduction of two brown strains, Portabella (sometimes also spelled portobello, portabello, or portobella) and Crimini. The three mushrooms you see to the right are all actually the same species. Portabella is a marketing name the mushroom industry came up with for more flavorful brown strains of Agaricus bisporus that are allowed to open to expose the mature gills with brown spores; crimini is actually the same brown strain that is not allowed to open before it is harvested. Per capita consumption of fresh Agaricus in the United States is about 2.2 pounds (1 kg) per year. Many people love to eat mushrooms in omelets, in stir-fry, on salads, and in soups. Marinated and grilled portabella is a treat not to be missed. Mushrooms are an excellent low-calorie meat substitute with great nutritional value and lots of vitamins..
--------------snip-------------
many thanks to Tom Volk for the preceding snip.

I wonder if you can just make a nice fresh cut on a crimini and put the shroom down on some agar and let it "root" then let it grow bigger and cut it down again?

I have made several clones from fresh mushrooms from my local grocery store. You may want to look into it.Here is a link on the basics

http://www.mykoweb.com/articles/cultivation.html

As a bonus since you only need a tiny amount to clone you get to have a taste test with the rest of the mushrooms!
I cloned Oyster Crimini + Portabello(before I found out they were Crimini too)in one night and ate them all in butter and garlic.
another day I cloned Enokie as well and grew spores from dried Cep.
you can probably get Shitakie too but I got plugs as a gift so didn't clone them.

what did you mean by "I wonder if you can just make a nice fresh cut on a crimini and put the shroom down on some agar and let it "root" then let it grow bigger and cut it down again? "

as if its a plant? besides the fact that I don't think it does anything besides start new mycellium growth, itd be completely contammed if you just stuck the whole shroom in there right?

As for your oyster and crimini cloning, i'm doing that right now.

Peterthinks, do you mind sharing how you start with spores from dry Cep? Would any other dry shrooms would work? Thanks!

Well I just bought a little bag of dried porcini/Cep and found a nice section of dried gills.
I took a dish(100mm)of PDA agar put a few drops of sterile mollasas/water solution in the middle of the plate(put 2cc mollasas measured with a 1 cc syringe with the needle cut off into 300ml water in a frutopia bottle and sterilize 30 min at 15 PSI)
then without touching the gills with my hands I scraped some dried spores off the gill surface with a sterile scalpel into the water drop. Then I taped the dish shut with a 1 inch saran wrap strip and put it in my incubator,a styro cooler with a fish tank heater in a jar inside it set to 80.
I was either very lucky or skilled(ahem!)
I got germination and no contamination on the first try!
If I did get a contamination to grow as well I'd just cut out the best looking part and put it in a new dish to grow on it's own.
then I soaked the dried mushrooms and fried them up.
I guess this would work with any mushroom that has been dried
if I had a whole cap to work with(my Cep was sliced)
I would have laid it in a dish gills down and put a moist(sterile water) cotton ball(sterile) on it to trick it into dropping spores on it's own.
If you happened to have some mushrooms in a baggie(ahem!)and that bag appears empty now you can probably still grow shrooms from that little bit of dust stuck in the corner of the bag.
Worth a shot if you know what to do with them after you have them growing again
Sadly my Cep are trapped in the dish waiting for more favorable weather it's just turning to winter here and I need better weather before I can introduce them to the local trees.I can't grow them without the tree they hang out with.

anyway...short version is
scrape into sugar water drop on PDA and incubate.

Good luck

Peterthinks
