All about Criminis
    #7821121 -

I have some questions about criminis im sure a few of you can anwser. Are they really just small portabellas. or r they a variation of the white button mushroom. Can they be cultivated on brfc or do they need to be done on a straw or compost based material. are the basic pin and fuiting temps between 60 and 75 degrees. Do they absolutely need to cold shocked to induce pinning. Are commercialy grow strains availible in stores the strongest, fastest, and most prolific strains you can get. are grains like rye/wheat berries the best way to produce spawn. i have more questions but alot of them pertain to the anwsers given to the questions alredy asked, so i will wait to see what you guys have to say

portobello's take longer too fruit, which makes for a deeper more rich flavor and they are similar in species as cremini's, but not exactly the same mushroom.

see i been reading things that say the portabella is just a crimini only given time to mature longer. and other like u say that it is a differant species. but none however can provide any real proof of either, and i havent been able to find any info on the internet except for this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agaricus_bisporus#Crimini_mushroom on wikipedia and we all know just how reliable that can be.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

The thing is, you never see overly mature cremini's, I've been a cook for years, and I've never come across cremini's bigger then 2" in diameter. That's the only thing that leads me too believe, its just a marketing gimmic, personally I like the mature meaty bello, over the cremini.

come on! an overly mature crimini is a port.

you never really see an overly mature white button either. They do mature and become huge but havent been designsed to be as big as ports

ok then  i think we can safely say that a portabello is just a mature crimini. I was thinkin that possibly ports are maybe just an isolate of the crimini that produces larger fruits and a more meaty flavor and texure of the portabello. but any way that only leaves the rest of the questions to be anwsered do any of you have the anwsers to these.

Same species, just different strains of it. A. bisporus that is.
