cremini/portabello growing
    #18170651 -

hello everyone at the shroomery, hope all is well

i recently fell in love with portabellos all over again, they are so tasty and plump. i have been wondering for sometime now, how would i go about growing them.
it is difficult to find any grow logs or pictorials via shroomery or even goolgle

does anyone any links to a good grow log?

i really want to try and grow these, i know they are harder than most mushrooms, but that will make it even sweeter when i actually do it

thanks for your help
take care

Hello bort.
Agaricus species are actually quite simple to cultivate.
You can actually grow them using any bulk sub tek for P.cubensis
The only difference is you want to use dung instead of coco coir.

Simply get some grain spawn together, inoculate, colonize then spawn the grains to horse dung and verm.
Or straw, or any mixture of the 3. They grow fine in monotubs at normal room temps.

Not sure if you're in a hurry but I can go into detail after work today.

I'd love to see some more detail on this.  I always thought they were difficult to cultivate, but maybe it's just certain types of agaricus that are tough?

In my experience,  and I've cultivated multiple Agaricus species, is that certain species can be painfully slow.
But its never a problem getting fruits.

Thanks Tmethyl!

i will read as much as i can on the bulk methods for p.cube's
you said you woul have to use dung instead of cooc coir, so i was wondering..

-with dung, would there be a much of a smell in my backroom?
-where would be a example spot to find dung? a nursey maybe?
-you said any mixture of the 3.. so can i do without dung and use verm/straw?

Yes you can do straw and Verm only
You'll have to look around your local area for dung. Prefer horse dung.
Properly aged dung smells like earthy dirt. It does not stink.

Wow great info! I've actually got a few different Agaricus species on agar right now. I had no idea you could fruit them in mono's at room temp. Thanks for sharing Tmethyl:thumbup:

Awesome way to remove the hurdles we think of when it comes to taking on something new. I dig that tmethyl

Tmethyl

I have found this video sometime ago.. it says that straw logs also work for P Cubes.. so would the logs or basket method also work for portabellos?

http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Straw-Projects

theres a small video on the page, with the p cubes mentioned at the end

Thanks

well one thing to keep in mind is that portobello which are in the  agaricus family are secondary decomposers  so they like substrates that have already been run through by other microorganisms like fungi and molds.

wouldnt hurt to try it though!

Also looking to grow crimini here (just picked up a few specimens from the supermarket today).

Started a spore print and am going to do a little cloning later.

Secondary decomposer, eh?  Are there any preferred fungi or molds they like?  Looking at hpoo, elk poo, cow poo or a mix of those and some softwood fuel pellets that have been pH adjusted.

So wait, would we be able to just mix our substrate and let it mix, or possibly mix it with fungi spores, and then just let it colonize over a month or so before inoculating with Cremini spawn?

They would like the bacteria from anerobic pasteurization of grain too, yes??

We LOVE portabella here

Peace

yes, composting is the standard method to make a substrate suitable for agaricus species. It has been experimented thoroughly and it's pretty much a science now on how to make excellent compost in a short amount of time. Check out the mush. cultivator by paul stamets as he gives a detailed description of how to make excellent compost.

although i would suspect that other substrates like poo would work well with agaricus, i dont have experience so if ya'll got the substrate and the spawn i think you should try some experimenting!

another thing stamets suggests is to used spent substrate (like straw that has been fruiting oysters) and re-pasteurize it then re-inoculate with a secondary decomposer.

Hi,

I am looking for Portobello strain and I believe that you had them I the past. I wonder whether you still have them. If yes, could you please share a small agar plate or some grain spawn to me. I could pay you a small amount.

email: rhong@gwu.edu

Thanks,
