growing edibles
    #964508 - 10/15/02 09:57 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

In my current project of growing some B+ and Mazatepec, I'm finding the cultivation process itself to be totally fascinating. Anyway I'm interested in growing some edibles, like portobellos, morrels, or buttons, but I can't really find any information on this, or spores.

Can I pick up a couple of refrigerated portobello caps at the supermarket and get a spore print from them? What about other species? Will they grow on PF cakes?

If you buy mushrooms from the supermarket, it is best to clone them instead of attempting to print them. Excise some tissue from the interior of the mushroom (never exposed to air) and then transfer to a plate of agar. Peroxidated agar works well for this.

Good luck.

I recently took a fresh Portobella that had Mycellium that was still fluffy and white and cut a good chunk off and placed it into some moist vermiculite and compost. it has only been 3 days but the mycellium is spreading andseems to be colonizing the verm. I will let you know if I get any more results or just get contaminated. I just wiped it off and used it right from the store. I did use sterile verm/compost mix though.

if you are still fairly new to muchroom cultivation I would not recomend trying to grow portabellos or especially morels. These mushrooms require fairly exacting growing conditions far different from p. cubensis.
start with oyster mushrooms (pluerotus sp.).
these are fairly forgiving & can be fruited on pf cakes.
sporeworks has syringes of two oyster species.
for lots of info concerning edible mushrooms & cultivation in general get Growing gourmet & medicinal mushrooms by Paul Stamets.
