Portobello spores - where can I get them???
    #16852359 -

Been a non-meat eater for a bunch of years.  My wife and I eat a fair amount of "portobello burgers".  Thought I'd research growing them, and lo and behold, they're hardly different from cubes, with which I have had great success in the past.

I have everything I need to cultivate these tasty shrooms...except spores.  Ralphster has "crimini" agaricus only...and I've checked other sources, which are either out of stock, or ridiculously expensive.

Any suggestions / links / assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Let the cremini mushrooms get over mature and bingo. You have portabellas.

Thanks for the prompt reply.  I was kind of unclear on that, and the relationship of button mushrooms to portabello.  Gonna have to pull out my Paul Stamets book "Growing Gormet and Medicinal Mushrooms and read up!

Thats where you are going to go wrong. The information in that book on the subject is incorrect and outdated. They are all different phenotypes of Agaricus bisporus. Simple as that.

Huh.  That makes a lot of sense.  I think I found what I'm looking for, spore-wise.  Will update this thread when the "fruits of my labor" are photogenic enough to warrant it.

Thank you Lipa for the education and new understanding!  :yourock:

You can also use a grocery store portabello for a spore print, cleaning it up on agar, of course.

I love them grilled also with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  Yumm!
