Temperature Help

Is 70 degrees too cold for mycelium to germinate and colonize.
If not would this slow the mycelium.

Day 5 now and only 2/12 jars have tiny white spots.
Normal for this temperature?

70 is very low for incubation. You could have used search to find this. Optimal incubation temperature is 85-86 degrees. Mycelium will still colonize but very slowly. Look into getting an incubator, there is plenty of threads on here about the tub in tub incubator using a fishtank heater. Relatively cheap investment.

i just discovered a new way to raise the heat while you wait to get your heater, i took a 32oz gatorade bottle and filled it with boiling water sprayed the shit out of it with lysol and set it in my incubator, very cheap way to do it temporarily but will not replace a good heating source

my jars are standing in the basement on the huge gasburner
at exactly 86 degrees

I dont think the gatorade bottle would last very long, maybe an hour or two. Cheap innovations means getting a light bulb seperating it from the jars(so no light hits them) and letting it get nice and warm in the incubater room. But this can lead to many fire hazards, not reccomended.

some say you don't need an incubator - they will colonize at room temperature. of course it depends what is your room temperature. mine is about 73?F in this period, which is probably too low. but i've also heard that the temperature inside the jars, which is the one that count, is higher than outside, so you'd probably reach the 86?F target at a lower ambient temperature (and would probably overheat inside the jars in a 86?F emnvironment). somebody correct me if i'm wrong, please!

It will still germinate and grow..just painfully slow. Your gonna be in for a long 4-6 weeks. Adding 13 degrees to that 70 will not only double or triple your colonization time but give you that fruiting trigger of a temp drop when the time comes it will make pinning easier and quicker.

why not heating the incubator with a bulb? all that water/aquarium heater thing seems quite messy, humidity inside the incubator can be as low as 50% so why bother about short circuits? my bedroom is much more humid than that. of course one should cover the jars with a cloth or foil not to let light in, but that doesn't seem much hassle...

you dont want the colonizing substrate to be around any light at all. Light is a pinning trigger. what does humidity have to do with a water heater. Fully submerssible heater goes in bottom tub, water inside, second tub goes on top. There is NO mess at all. You can use the light method you describe near the end sure, but why? Light attracts attention and the tub in tub incubator puts out a much more even temperature. Also it is very easy to control, i didnt know lights have temperature settings like water heaters do.

i know that the aquarium thing is better, but i was proposing a cheaper alternative. my humidity issue was: people fear electric bulbs in humid environments because of a short circuit danger, and they are right to do so, but since there's no need of high humidity in the incubator, one could use a bulb! a bulb costs nothing, an aquarium heather costs much more than nothing and two tubs cost twice as much as one tub! you might use a red bulb or a ceramic bulb to avoid the light problem or simply cover the jars with a heavy cloth or some cardboard. a timer (or your finger) can light the bulb on and off to keep the right temperature inside. this seems to me a cheap alternative to the water system, which is what the guy who posted here in the first place was looking for.

I use those hand warmer things that hunters use. Set my fruiting chamber on top of them and maintains 81-84 degrees. Also adds to the humidity!
