How long will brf packed jars last before they go bad?

i have 8 half pint jars that I packed with BRF about 1 month n a half ago...They have been in a cool dark area in my room....airtight in the jars.

Should I make a new MRF mix or will these cakes be fine for sterlization/inoculation?

im no pro but i would say that as long as there are no visible contams just pc again and you should be fine

It hasn't been too long. The only concern other than contams I'd have is the moisture level.. but if its only a month and a half and they're airtight, I know I personally would give them a shot. Not sure if its the right answer though :smile:

If they weren't sterilized before you stored them, they're going to be a nasty mess, even if you PC them now.. the stuff that has been growing in there for the last month and a half will have used up moisture, nutrients and airspace.

I'd just make new jars. Substrate is cheap compared to all the time and effort required for a grow, just to have it be the problem.

I made a huge mistake mixing my jars up before I was ready to inoculate and ended up with some pretty nasty stuff growing in them. It's pretty suprising to hear that you have no contams yet. I thought they would immediately grow unless you cooked them right after mixing. I would mix up some new jars just to be extra safe.

A couple of years ago, I had some extra jars (ran out of syringe juice) and I put them away -- NOTE: they were steam/sterilized and had tape over the holes. It was atleast a month later when I used them and they worked fine. If they hadn't then I didn't do a good job of cooking them. I could be wrong, but when my jars are done and ready to be inoculated, I think of them as being similar to the canned foods in my pantry -- able to be stored and clear of nasty stuff.
