Hi, there.

How about this weather? Crazy for this time of year, eh?

How's your family? Is your sister doing well in school? Is your brother out of jail yet?

That's a shame.

I don't know why but that seemed appropriate.

Small talk is tough. So many people want to talk about mindless crap. But when you start talking about important topics they get all pissed because they see things a different way.

Maybe just get drunk. That's conducive to idiotic mindless small-talk.

I am not for idiotic small talk. I rather talk about things with meaning. But getting drunk always works.

the best method of small talk is to ask questions to the other person...

"so, what do you think of...?"
"now, what is your opinion of...?"
"how was your weekend?"

people love to talk about themselves so just create the opportunity.

The main trick to this is to get the other person talking about him/herself. People love to talk about themselves!

I can only tell my stories so much. Its hard getting much out of other people for me.

Small talk doesn't have meaning though, that's why it's small.

usually it's a good idea to start small,
unless something provokes the conversation (or you know the person well).

you can easily progress from small talk to "meaningful" talk though..just pay attention to what is being said in the small talk and branch out from there.

its usually not a good idea to wander up to someone and start spouting about philosophy, religion, literature or anything of the like right off the bat.. (unless the person is carrying a book around or something, that's a good topic starter)

I think communication and feeling connected with other people is healthy.
So who cares if your just talking about mundane shit, instead of the socio-political impact of trade routes on who-gives-a-fuck-istan.
There is plenty of time for both.

Remember, its all about the experience!
