Shrooms in NJ (Lib caps?)
    #324122 - 05/23/01 11:36 AM (23 years, 4 months ago)

Hi all. Recently I went to my uncles house in NJ and was hanging out on his patio when I noticed some little funguys in his lawn. They looked very much like libert caps from what I've seen. They had the frilled edges, same color and size. They were going from a tree stump in the middle of his lawn. The tree was cut a year or two ago and is slightly below surface of grass but flush with ground. The stems were hollow the spores were black, very dark purple. I did not notice any immediate blueing so I tossed em. Then I come to find out that blueing can sometimes take a while. I also found a mushroom at my aunts house also in NJ. It was rather large 4-5" in height with a large cap (3 1/2-4"). When I picked this one it started blueing immediately. This was some time ago so I was taking any chances and tossed it. What do you think these are?

Does anyone else know of any shrooms in NJ, besides that species listed by MJ "Ps. Graveolens". I am going back soon and would like to take a short foray. I think there are more species there than just this but don't think too many people look around there.

Well, libs don/'t grow from buried wood but the very similar looking P. pelliculosas might, and some similar looking Psathryellas certainly do. Hollow stem strongly suggests the latter--sorry, no magic there.

As for the large bluing mushroom you threw away, did it have dark bladelike gills under the cap, or a spongy porous layer? If the latter, it was just some kind of Bolete (probably a Suillus or "slippery jack") and nothing special; if the former, you may have thrown away the rarest mushroom in New Jersey and possibly the northeastern USA!
