INACTIVE Liberty Caps??? Help!

After looking at info on these and other sites, we decided to go liberty cao picking in Cambridge (UK). We found ones that looked exactly like liberty caps, both colour and size-wise. We found lots, and we ate lots, but they didn't really have any effect!! (This was about 2 months ago.) Can anyone explain this?? Are there species of mushrooms that look exactly like liberty caps but have no psychedelic effect? Or does psilocybin content change with the time of year?? We picked about 500 in total snd ended up eating about 200 each (fresh) and were very dissapointed with the (non-existent) effects. Please help! Thanks.

Look isn't only tool in finding out if your mushroom is psychoactive. You didn't find weak Lib Caps, what you found was a non-active and non-poisonous (thank god) species. You just got very lucky. There are several different ways of identifing Psi Mushrooms. A lot of them (such as the lib caps) have a pellicle, a thin, clear, stick skin on the cap. You should have taken spore prints. Some can bruise blue near the bottom. It is scary that you chose to test them by eating them. When people do things like that, the law enforcement goes buck wild on trying to stop people from getting these mushrooms. Such as spraying fungicide and making laws much worse. You should buy "Psylocybin mushrooms of the world" by Paul Stamets. It will help you tremendously. And don't go eating anymore mushrooms, atleast not the non-psychoactive ones...

When you're not an experienced picker, what looks "exactly" like a liberty cap, or any other fungus, can be a bit fuzzy to say the least. Plenty of people have died from eating amanitas that looked "exactly" like field mushrooms to them, where to the experienced eye they look only superficially similar. Be careful!

Personally if I were a first time picker, I wouldn't go after psilocybe semilanceata (lib cap) mainly because it fits into the category of LBM (little brown mushroom) that to the unexperienced eye can look just like thousands of other mushrooms you see every day. I don't know about the UK so much, but there are many other psilocybes that you can look for that are much easier to identify.
