Attachment to one's opinions

Ever notice how when someone disagrees with them, they often take it as a personal insult against them and become offended? If someone says something negative about their favorite band, a role model they look up to, their religion, or their political party, they take it personally. I feel that this is pure egotism, and it prevents us from opening our minds and advancing our knowledge and wisdom.

Everyone does it, and theres no way of changing that. Best thing to do really is to accept it. Unless heaven comes to earth

I don't think I do it. I used to, when I was younger. I think it's something that comes with age, and maturity. I learned that I was not my beliefs. Anyone can have an opinion that is different from mine on the president that I like, whether abortion is right or wrong, or whether God exists.
This does not mean that there is something wrong with me, or that I have to defend my beliefs. Everyone's entitled to their beliefs, even if different from mine, except that, of course, they'd be wrong.

I don't think everyone does it, attachment to concepts is a self-conscious thing. Concepts are relatively new to evolution, giving symbols to everything we categorize, and so we hold it very dearly, but as we evolve we will realize the subjectivity of all our concepts until you get to someone like the Buddha, who I doubt would care at all if anyone criticized anything he said.
This attachment and egotism is just a passing phase

What's the point to criticising anothers personal preferences anyway?
Isn't that also an attempt at boosting ones ego?
Think about it.
Isn't being critical of anothers ego also an attempt at boosting ones own ego?
That reminds me of the phrase, "the one who smelt it dealt it". LOL
Okay, I'm feeling really silly now but, do you see what I am saying?
I can't wait until we ALL get past judging this ego stuff and just let people get high or down on them selves as it serves them too.
I think egomaniacs are hysterical and ego depressives are funny in their own way too, like Glum from Gullivers Travellers 'we're all doomed"
I think it adds to the diverse richness of our personalities. If eveyone was totally egoless, life would be BORING. If everyone induldged in ego games "knowing they are doing it without attachment" and no body cared because they were all in on it, life would be ridiculously fun. That would be freedom in my book.
After all, we would all know that people are not their egos and that we are not our own, so whats the big deal? It would be like an on going costume party. Why are so many in a flurry hurry to strip people of their egos high or low?
Sure, it's good to be able to stand naked, but once you can comfortably, why can't you put some fun costumes on when you feel like it?
It's great to become aware of the link between ego attachments and suffering, but once someone has that down, and can do a 2 second jiffy heal, what's the problem for them or anyone else?
Just coming from left field on this one. It might be ahead of its time and maybe not.
Egos are like costumes to me!

It's okay to criticize one's beliefs, in a constructive manner. It's when it's done in a destructive manner that it is coming from the ego and closes the door to communication.

this is an awesome point that I am happy to be reminded of
psst...it's ok to be wrong too
-------------------- Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

yup, we are loyal to our thoughts. no problem with that, as long as you recognize your thoughts are always based on limited information. If your information changes, then your thoughts change. Or they should. I'd like to think I'm really pliable and flexible and ductile with opinions, but I'm not always. neither are you.
