Nice finds DH! I've been trying to keep my eye open for matsutake [never found them before], but there are so many damn white russulas and lactarius around! Anything strike you as obvious when you see them?

yeah, I ended up finding a whole lot more russulas than matsutake when I was checking all the spots I could see something was trying to poke up through the forest floor. I think the flush is just starting though (just pinning at 2200', a few with broken veils at 2500'), this rain should help things out. I don't know if you mean something obvious appearance wise or habitat wise, but the matsutakes have brownish scales on them, most of the russulas I saw were all white. then the cottony veil and inrolled cap margin, along with the smell. you'll know it when you smell one . Mushrooms Demystified says they're found in the same kind of areas as the white chants, I've found this to be true . DH

yeah, I tried a couple in a stir fry kinda deal, couldn't really taste them that way, heh. then tried one button sliced up and fried alone with some soy sauce and garlic salt, it was pretty good but kind of chewy. I'm not sure how they're supposed to be cooked, recipes for them are hard to find, gonna try something else tomorrow and see how that goes. they're definitely worth trying but I dont think they're worth $120 a pound .
