Last week's mushrooms, including some gyms
    #7348354 - 08/29/07 12:39 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

Last week, I went to the woods with my brother in law. I got him into mushroom hunting last year and now he's virtually unstoppable. He has learned everything he could find about boletes and he even bought a digital SLR to take mushroom shots with. He asked me to teach him a little about mushroom photography, which I was of course delighted to do, not in the least because it was a good opportunity to shoot some pics myself too. Well, here they are, enjoy!

Unknown species, possibly mycena

Another unknown. I thought they were lactarias, but I broke off a piece of a cap and there was no milk. No clue what these are.

The inevitable sulphur tufts, hypholoma fasciculare

Turkey tails, trametes sp.

More sulphur tufts

Russula, probably russula ochroleuca

Pluteus sp., possibly pluteus phlebophorus

Lactarius sp., don't know which one. Possibly l. rufus or something similar

Yet another sulphur tuft shot

Buttons of amanita rubescens

Button of amanita citrina

A giant gymnopilus, this thing was absolutely humongous, it was over a foot tall! It could barely carry its own weight; it was a miracle we found it still standing upright.

Some gym buttons at the base of a beech. Not sure of the species, but I can't find a closer match than g. spectabilis

More gyms

And some pics from the area we were strolling through.

I was carrying a tripod anyway...

That's all for now folks! Hope you enjoyed the show!

Thanks for the comments, yeah, I was really pleased with the pics of the stream myself as well. Maybe I'll print one.

My guides list g. spectabilis and g. junonius as the same species. I don't know jack shit about gyms, aside from general appearance and I usually know one when I see one. I wouldn't know how to tell spectabilis apart from junonius though. What are the differences?

Ah, that explains it.

I like the one with the swirls as well. They are little specks of foam created by the rapids btw, the exposure time of 4 seconds (this was shot at f/32; very large depth of field but very little light travelling through the aperture) made the swirls. I think it came out very nice indeed.

ohh my god, thanks really thank you for share this amazing pictures , sometimes you get you eyes sore but this refresh all , i wish you could teach me some picture tricks, i was enjoying your post,as always, travelling without moving ,until i saw your last 4 pictures and i can´t exactly recall what i fell , but leave spechh leess, nice forest, it remind me of the kind of envoroment the psilocybe like here , but the diference is that type of vegetacion is olny few meter all along the river more metter away oaks and pine grow, but inside, alnus, oaks, magnolia, podocarpus, fraxinus, grow
all my best vibratiion ,

Thanks for the kind words all! Yeah, the woods here are really very beautiful, even though they unvariably have a very 'donmesticated' look to them. Most areas feature uniform trees that were planted in uncreative patterns (usually straight patterns) with very little undergrowth. Most of the bushes and the smaller trees used to be cut to keep the woods accessible to the forest services and loggers. Luckily, philosophies have been changing over the years, leaving more room for nature to manage the woods and plants and trees to grow as they please. I wouldn't be surprised if the habitat for the tons of chanterelles that used to grow here until about 50 years ago recovers over the following years and the chants gradually start to reappear.

kaal-kopje: bedankt, nette plaat van die psilos ook in je sig, ziet er strak uit! Had ze zelf nog nooi zo gevonden onder de struiken en in het zand.
