wow, rare poster, youve been around for a while. nice to see you post something now and again lol. alot of gymns need to be consumed. I watched an old man eat about 10 large fresh mushrooms. he said it was a level 2, with a slight peak of level 3. his face the whole time looked like he was hungover or being tortured. they taste VERY bad. cubes look like a phillicheesesteak sandwich after your first taste of gymnopilus.

LMAO.. Awww they are not that bad doom... LOL I had some nice find's last season.. First dose was 5 grams with a fellow shroomery member.. We had a mild wonderful trip with lots of frikking belly laughs.. The second trip I consumed about 8 grams the come up was terrible so I sent my friend home and retreated to bed where I stuck on my MP3 with Roger Waters Addicted to Death... Lets just say I had a hard experience and It lasted about 5 hours.. Nothing like the first experience. I still look for them when is season and I will give them a shot as I find them.. Kinda a good thing I have only found em a few times The burps from Gyms are enough to make one hurl ......

Are they like Amanitas- do you need to cook them? If not, maybe they would taste better cooked??

Cat... Nothing like Amanita.. Gyms are in the same category as Cubes,Copes,Pans.. They grow all over the world but not all are active.. About the only way to tell if they are even close to being active is to look for the bruising... like in this pic.. Look close at the cluster on the right on the small pins..

ShroomDan has some killer pics of this Bruising also.. I have seen some Gyms found in California but as far as I have heard they are not active.. For some strange reason there is a invisible line across the US that divides the Gyms. And in most cases only the Gyms found in the Eastern half have chances of being active.. Oz and NZ have active Gyms also.. But its a blind shooting match and its in the hands of the Hunter that finds them to be the final word as If they are active or not..

Gyms are soo bad ass! They are on the top of my list of very favorite mushrooms although I've never found any. I took some along with some subbs. The trip was mild but it was very much worth it. I went swimming and did some fun stuff in the water!

I see! I figured as much since the Amanitas have different active properties(muscimol, ibotenic acid), compared to the Psilocybin and Psilocin containing mushrooms- which cause the blue bruising, unlike the Amanita with muscimol.
However, sources such as this commonly linked to: http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/12182
California(San Francisco to Oregon) Amanita muscaria Copelandia cyanescens (Arora, 1986) Copelandia tropicalis Gymnopilus *aeruginosus (Peck) Singer. (Stamets, 1996). Gymnopilus liquiritae Gymnopilus luteofolius (Peck) Singer. (Stamets, 1996). Gymnopilus sapineus Gymnopilus spectabilis Hypholoma popperiana Panaeolus fimicola Panaeolus papilionaceus Psilocybe azurescens Stamets Gartz. (Stamets, 1996). (Introduced). Psilocybe baeocystis Psilocybe cyanescens Wakefield. (Guzmán, 1983). Psilocybe cyanofibrillosa Psilocybe pelliculosa (Smith) Singer & Smith. (Guzmán, 1983). Psilocybe semilanceata Fr.) Kummer. Psilocybe stuntzii Guzmán & Ott. (Guzmán, 1983).
List a number of avtive Gymnopilus species that can be found in California. I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes out, and make the final judgement if they are active or not when I finally come across some. Thanks for the info- and nice pics! I see what you mean, the bruising is subtle!! Would have missed it in the first pic if you had not pointed it out

LOL ya lots of mushrooms in Nor Cal... I love to point this out.. I grew up in Anaheim and I will be the first to say that So Cal is a Dead Zone for any kind of active mushroom.. Well less P Subs...
Nor Cal on the other hand can be a Cornucopia of Mushrooms..

There have been some posts in here with finds and experiences. See if you can find any with "search posts". Try looking in posts dating back 3 years or so.

Big Laughing Gyms are my favorite mushroom, but IMO they are worthless unless collected in the pin/button stage. Here are some photos of potent gyms.

Here is a good meathod of preparation .
