Best vendor to buy pre-sterilized jars

I'm very interested in growing my own mushrooms and have been doing alot of research on the topic all over for the last few weeks. I think the best way for me to go is to buy the pre sterilized jars.

i couldnt find much here regarding places to buy the jars. i found earthstongue and the info i found showed they were real rip offs and bad people. The comparisions were $60 for 6 half pints at earthstongue, 12 halfs for $30 at another website, and $2 per at another website, but those websites have since died.

Looked at the vendors page and most seemed to only sell the spores, not the jars. Anyone have a good place to buy the jars from?

Welcome.

I get mine at a HEB food store.Got to go thur a PC or water bath.
Don't buy off internet.What you pay in shipping you could buy twice as many.

Thanks for the quick responses! pfjars wants $50 for 12 jars shipped which doesn't seem too bad, but 12 is an aweful lot of jars for my dorm room!

I want to get the pre-done jars mainly because I live in a dorm room without access to a pressure cooker, and it is much easier if i get the jars pre-done and just have to be injected.


Seems that the grains are best to use, and i need a pc for whole grain... I hate spending 2-3x as much buying pre-done jars, but I don't see many other options for me here. I need to use grains but dont have a pc. Suggestions?

Mahalo for the idea! I just found that as opposed to using a PC, you can use the same jars and whole grains and boil those for 3 days. This sounds like the best route for me instead of using PF or a pc. I read the pages on boiling with the pillow stuffing as a filter. Do you basiclly boil the jars with the grains in it, then after the third day the jars are safe to be injected with the spores?

That doesn't sound right. I wouldn't use grains without a pc. You can boil pf jars, but I wouldn't boil grains. The risk of contamination is just too high.

Thanks, Domey! I am going to give this a shot on my own instead of buying pre-made jars! The boiling technique sounds like the tek for me! The latest FAQ I read ("The PF - Tek") says to use BRF and doesnt mention grains.

Will try to gather my supplies this week, and find someone to order spores from on the vendor page!
