For all you experienced brown thumbs out there... here's a lil question. Here I go... for 1 pound of fresh mushrooms... how much would that weigh after I dry them?

That would be 1.6 dried oz.

Mushrooms are said to be about 90% water - so take 10% of one pound and you get (16 oz) / 10 = 1.6 oz

My friend says, from his own personal experience, that 1 pound wet would be more along the lines of 2 oz. cracker dry

1.6 ounces is pretty damn close to two ounces though. are you saying a little over two ounces by saying "along the lines of" cause if not, 1.6 is along the lines of two ounces to me ;)

It'll be less than 1.6 oz because they're usually more like 92-93% water.
.08 * 16 = 1.28 oz

maybe it has to do with the strain he grows, i believe it is B+, but time and time again he will pick his flush and weigh them. His last flush came to 170g wet(just picked moments before actually), then dried them (yes... they were 'cracker' dry) weighed them now (on the same scale of course), and they came to 20 g. This happens time after time.....
But of course Stamets (God to many of you) must be right and since there is of course no possibility that his 90-92% water could ever be off by a small percentage, I must therefore be wrong. So just disregard my friends claims if you will

answer me this fellows:
If you have 1 ounce of soggy ass 'fatasses'
and
1 ounce of nice thin mushies----
do you think both will end up weighing the same???????
Do you feel there is no variation whatsoever in nature? is everything always standardized? Tghink about this the next time you dose!!

The water content percentage also has to deal alot with environmental conditions. Staments estimation at the time was 90-93% (Or whatever it was) but that was only at that time in those conditions. His obsevation was probably an average or median of his overall findings. I'm sure the water content is not set in stone and is liable to fluctuate within a small scale. Perhaps your conditions if constant usualy give the mushrooms a lower water content. I don't know why you will argue with him. If that is waht he observed than so be it. There are water-logged shrooms just as there are dryer ones. The environment is the key factor. 90-93% is just the most common number.

shroomeatindude.. my experience has been that 10% of the wet weight has been a disappointingly overly-generous dry weight estimate. Using 7-8% has worked better for me. That's just my experience, your milage may vary.
The thing I worry about w/ folks that are sold on the 10% estimate is that they might think their shrooms are fully dry when the weight drops to that estimate. Then the subsequent loss of their crop to rotting during what they thought would be safe storage. It's got nothing to do with being 'right', a Stamets' devotee or whatever. Just trying to give the advice I wish I'd gotten.
