gentoo sounds pretty fucking cool.
I'm learning debian now - maybe I can create a test partition to fuck around with it.

i'm running a debian-based distro right now... i've been interested in gentoo since i first became interested in linux but the installation looks a tad intimidating.

open source in general is just awesome.

lol!
debian installs are the hardest i've ever had to do.

gentoo is super simple.
you can even pick what level of difficulty you want in your install.

gentoo super simple? I have no experience but the instructions make it look like there's a high learning curve - I could be wrong though.

gentoo installation on x86 is wicked easy... the instructions just lay out EVERYTHING you need to do and explains it. on the sparc it was a bit more difficult to get installed/working, but still easier then netBSD.

Yeah, gentoo's both cool, and easy.  And as debian said, debian installs are a bitch.  I stopped using debian about 4 years ago...  its apt-get pissed me off too much.  I'm sure it's changed and gotten better, but it's too late -- i've moved on

These  days, I'm using my self-made distro, but if I had to choose a brandname, i'd almost always go with Slackware

Man, you shoulda tried getting gentoo 1.0 to work on sparc. Holy fucking nightmare. I used to sit in their dev channel and work directly with all the sparc dev guys becuse it was so broken.

Gentoo is the only distro that i think has it all together and i wouldnt consider broken. i always hear of people leaveing it and haveing to come back just like me. and now they have released portage for OS X . i dont use my mac much except for a NFS file server but i might try putting portage on it

holy dear god yes, it wa sa nightmare.

I converted the pr0n chains entire internet commerce crap from about 50 redhat and bsd boxen to 10 boxes on gentoo sparc, then ended up scrapping sparc near th end of the project because SSL crap REFUSED to work on sparc hardware, with no fix coming anytime soon (not gentoo's fault)

I moved it to gentoo x86 and it was nice. A few scripts and some monitoring tools made maintaining it a breeeeze.
