Gentoo is great if you want to tweak every last clock cycle out of your system, but it is a pain in the disc if you want a hands off system that simply works out of the box. I enjoy tweaking every last clock cycle, so I really like gentoo, but I can appreciate the position of people that don't care and simply want something that works without too much effort.

have you ever broke anything with #emerge -u world?
i read scary stories
do you back up before you update?

heres a backup script i found
http://blinkeye.ch/mediawiki/index.php/GNU/Linux_System_Backup_Script_%28stage4%29
you might have to change it a little to fit your needs

i back up religiously
there is alot time invested in this system
i'd cry if i toasted it

How could you toast anything? All the new versions are pre-approved by the devs. I leave my system running stable versions, and every once in awhile I find that the new version of a package sucks, so I revert to the old version, problem solved.

Ooh, we have a graphical installer now. Almost makes me wish I didn't have Gentoo already, so I could try the installer out.

install vserver, create a new root folder in vserver, and install gentoo into that. then you can try out the gui install without affecting your base system... or try another partition/hard drive.
