here's how to install all the codecs you need:
Quote:
1. install various codecs from repositories
* sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-plugins * sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-lame * sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg * sudo apt-get install lame * sudo apt-get install sox * sudo apt-get install ffmpeg * sudo apt-get install mjpegtools * sudo apt-get install vorbis-tools * sudo apt-get install flac
2. then download and install w32 codec and libdvdcss2
* sudo dpkg -i w32codecs_20050412-0unofficialubuntu2_i386.deb * sudo dpkg -i libdvdcss2_1.2.8-1unofficialubuntu3_i386.deb
3. REGISTER codecs with the command
* gst-register-0.8
4. Get and install xine (or gxine - what I prefer on gnome)
* sudo apt-get install gxine
I have the .debs if you want them.

Thanks. That just saved me a lot of trouble. I guess I'll just keep these 40 gigs for windows.

you need to setup a dual-boot: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WindowsDualBootHowTo
basically:
Quote:
#
Once you have the CD, insert it into your CDROM drive and reboot your PC.
*
If the computer does not boot from the CD (eg. Windows starts again instead), check your BIOS settings and fix as appropriate.
#
If successfully booted from CD, the Ubuntu Logo will be displayed on the screen, press Enter to continue. #
Follow the prompts. #
The installer will then detect your hard drives and load the disk partitioner.
1.
Choose "Manually edit partition table" *
Listed will be your current partitions 2.
Select the partition you want to resize and press Enter. 3.
Select "Size:", press Enter. 4.
Select Yes, press Enter. 5.
Type in a new size in Gigabytes for your the partition, its recommended you make AT LEAST 10 GB of free space for your Ubuntu install. Press Enter when happy with your changes. It may take some time to apply the changes. 6.
Create a swap partition of around 500mb. 7.
Create a partition for your Ubuntu installation, at least 10 GB. 8.
Select "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk". 9.
Finish installing your Ubuntu system. 10.
On reboot, remove your Ubuntu cdrom from the cdrom drive, you should be presented with a list of operating systems to boot. Ubuntu should have automatically detected your Windows installation and added an option to boot it on this screen.

if setting up a dual-boot (quite easy - see above instructions) scares you, then linux is not for you.

It's not that it scares me. It's just that my laptop is only 40 gigs.

My laptop isn't on that list. I take it that means it's not compatible?

what make/model?
I'm sure that list isnt definitive and I am not an authority on laptops. ask the forums or irc channel. http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=102 or #ubuntu on irc.freenode.net
you should try out a live cd 1st to see what works & what doesnt.
that's the first step... that & reading a bit more.

there is a gnu 'version' of photoshop - the gimp that will basically do the same things as photoshop (i know, photoshop elite will hate me for saying that, but for the average (and even above average) user, i think gimp is just fine (and free!)).
the install kept screwing up on me, leading me to believe there is a problem with the hard-drive or cd-rom drive on the computer i was trying to do the install on. trying it again, and am further along now than i was yesterday -- if this fails, i'll boot from a minix type floppy, reformat and set up the partitions properly, and then try to do a network install.
also downloading the latest gentoo iso to install it on a friend's computer in the next few days. it'll be interesting to compare the debian that i'm so used to with ubuntu (albeit the ubuntu running on a much crappier machine) and gentoo.
if you still aren't having luck Paradigm, and want to go through with this, send me a msg, and i'll try to walk you through it...

It depends. There are some things GIMP does better than Photoshop, and some things that Photoshop does better than GIMP. All in all, though, I prefer photoshop.

the install should only take 30 mins - maybe a bit longer on a slow machine.

http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=17 or possibly with crossoveroffice
you could always use gimpshop.
I prefer the gimp - does everything I need it to.
