im interested in gentoo

Is gentoo hard for a linux beginer to use and learn with?
I have been using fedora core 1 for a while now and have become very interested in linux.
I am mostly interested in learning to use the shell to its full potential. I try to use the shell for everything I need to do.
I am 'fairly' familiar with the way the bash shell works.
Should I just get it and go for it?

Go for it. The installation isn't that hard, and it's really the only part that's more complex than using most other distros. The gentoo documentation is EXCELLENT, and if you run into any problems that the documentation doesn't cover, the forums on gentoo.org are filled with very helpful, very knowledgable folks.

Once you're finished with the installation, you're going to find the portage system to be a godsend. You'll be wondering why people consider Fedora so easy to use in no time.

Go for it, I'm installing Gentoo right now, I'm completely new to linux. The install isn't going to good for me, mainly because I have a USB DSL modem, wich aren't really supported in linux, the installation looks really complicated at first, but the handbook walks you through step by step, follow it step by step and you'll be fine, if your hardware is supported.

can you view the handbook while you install or do you have to print it?

You can mostly view it throughout the install, but if I remember correctly, there are some times when it might not be easily accessible. I'd recommend printing it.
