Having trouble! No pins!
    #313850 - 05/10/01 09:42 AM (23 years, 6 months ago)

I have two problems and would appreciate any help given!

#1- My 100% colonized cake will not pin. It has been in the terrarium for two weeks. Humid/Temp is 94/72. There are no contams. It sits in a pan of damp 50/50 which sits on perlite. The cake has grown into the 50/50, myceliu7m has grown fuzzy and white.

#2 - My 50/50 casing has stalled. No contams or cobweb.
H/t same has above.

They are both in the same terrarium and it is fanned two times a day. I need help quick!

AFOAF ia having the same problems with his casings, and it sucks. he feels your pain. Everyone says to be patient, but this is ridicilous.

How come pins appear quickly for some, and take forever for others despite proper conditions?? Is this the great mystery of Mycology?

Are you using a 12/12 light cycle? Myabe you could try cold shocking, but most say it is not necessary. Good luck and keep us updated

G, I know next to nothing about cakes. The one thing I do know is they can sit in a terrarium for weeks before pinning. No surprise there. How long ago did you case? Has the mycelia broken thru to the surface? Usually, it takes a week to colonize your casing layer and another week to see pins.

let the casings self humidify whatever you have them in ... all that perilite and 50/50 on the bottom may be causing the mycelium to still be vegitative ... try fanning more often... or (this works 2)... mist the fluff .. yes you heard me ... mist the mycelium... it's worked for many monkeys.... dont over do it ... one should work ... look at it the next day ... it's not so fluffy anymore right??? looks like it's starting to knot up right??? take it from there... peace

word BP, they say never mist the mycelium but the mycelium sometimes gets dry and shiny indicating moisture loss, especially w/cakes. (i suspect this is the case here) if so you can do a few things, mist the cake directly, recase with fresh wet verm or scrap it, dunk and case next time (which netted a sweet harvest last time, cased right afterwards - pins in 3 days) enjoy your day

The strain is EQ.
i got home today to find one casing contaminated. green mold all over, when broken up(after removal from terrarium) it revealed large golden mold in spots.
My other casing doesn't look contaminated. I cased it about a week and a half ago. I dug down a little on a small side patch and the mycelium showed no growth. The crumbled pieces had growth together to form the network, but it seems like they just stopped.
The cake is showing no pins.
I think I'm going to bring the casing out of the terrarium into a different terrarium with no perlite. Mist daily. Hope for the best.

that sounds like your best bet no humidity terranium.Till they pin that is.I had some success with the eq's there not as easy as everyone claims them to be.I had great trouble with them and only got a couple cakes to fruit 2out of 8 to be exact. No contams either.I did however have great success with the "thai ks" from Hawk. His Mazatapecs are quicker and provide a better trip then the thai's much more visual, smoother too.Easy to fruit virtually effortless not difficult like the eq's.Just my opion though.

definately mist and move the casings... when you touch the top casing layer, does it feel moist to the touch???? it should ... i dont know why the mycelium didn't grow thru but there could be sometning in your casing(whatever your using) that's stopping growth... because it doesnt really matter what strain you use , the mycelium will grow thru casing...

I plan on doing all that today. I came home yesterday and the casing that was contaminated had fought it off. It decreased by 80%!

ok. The strain is not EQ, but it is A strain. Got stoned and forgot.
Stalled casing has been removed from humidity.
I decided to dunk the cake in skim milk.
Any other help?
