Trouble Initiating Pins....
    #1667457 - 06/27/03 05:16 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Its been about 8 days since my friend birthed his cakes into the terrarium. He is running a Ultrasonic Humidifier into the terrarrium. The Temperature ranges from 75-80 degrees with a fluorescent fixture above the terrarium. Well the cakes are looking fluffy and happy but he still has yet to see any pin heads form. Why arent any Pins forming? Should He just Wait Longer? Reduce Humidity (are my cakes being oversaturated by the humidifier)? Increase? Throw Icecubes in there to Ghetto Cold Shock? Should I try Dunking the Cakes? Please let me know if he is worrying too much about it and just to wait it out. Any suggestions are welcome thx~.

Do you have a good hygrometer for checking RH %? I know some people like to use ultrasonic humidifier but personnaly, I never messed with this so I can't be of any help with your humidifier. Just make sure there is no condensation or water that forms on the cake itself.

If you're going PF tek, the simplest terrarium is a rubbermaid container with wet perlite (let say 2 inches of perlite and 1 inch of water). That way, you are sure to get around 99% humidity.

But hey, 8 days is not dramatic yet. I saw some cakes taking 3 days pinning and others more than 10 days and they were put in the same terrarium.

You may also try to cold shock em by dunking the cakes in tap water and put to fridge for 12 hours (no more than 24 hours).

good luck.

fresh air...

you need lots and lots of fresh air for
pinning to occur.

dunking never hurts.

cold shocking is useless.

If you can, just lower the temp several degrees. The FAQ says no more than 75.

"A nation's hope of lasting peace cannot be firmly based upon any race in armaments but rather upon just relations and honest understanding with all other nations...

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed... The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people..."

I once had some cakes get fluffy. I posted about it and was told that the temp might be to high. That the cakes were still in the vegetative state of growth. They also said that they proabley would only yeild a small number of mushrooms if allowed to get like this. They hit the nail right on the head. Good luck!

Are you sure you want to eat those?:mushroom2:

You have to be careful with fluffy shit. I thought i just had some standard aerial mycelium... until i got some forest green patches. That means it might have been trichoderma harzanium which is one of the worst contaminants you could ever encounter. It's about as bad as it gets, so be careful if any green patches occur, because you could contaminate your entire house with it and be really really really screwed. In general though, fan like 3 or 4 times a day, lower to humidity to 95%, try to take cold packs and switch them in and out of the terrarium so that the temps go down a little bit. Just wait. I had a cake take 2.5 weeks to pin once time.

In fact all your mushrooms really need is a few minutes of light a day to grow fruits but for pinning I give it 12 hours light. All they need the light for is to know which way is up so they know which way to grow, but the amount of light given will not affect wether you get mushrooms or not.

The heigth of your mushrooms will also not be determined by the amount of light provided. Sometimes mushrooms will grow longer if they have less light

*thread hijack*

I know that RH should be ~95% for cakes, what should it be with casings? I've heard from leaving it out in the open to leaving them in a terrarium with 99% humidity. What's best?
