Trouble checking out terrarium
    #413092 - 10/03/01 11:14 PM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Tomorrow's most likely gonna be my first little one's birthday! Problem is, after much preparation of the terrarium (ultrasonic humidifier setup) with 2 coke bottles, since I'm using a 15-min timer and should need less drying stages, the Radio Shack digital thermometer/hygrometer inside isn't cooperating. I've tried one 15 min interval on followed by 1.25 hr off, and even 1.5 hr off, but by the end of either 'off' cycle, the hygrometer was still reading ABOVE 95%, like 96-98...what puzzles me is, the specs say it only reads up to 95%. Is the device screwed up from it being too humid inside? Is it really too humid inside for too long? I doubt it, because there is really no condensation on the sides at the end of the 'off' cycle-I want my babies to have a good home! Please help!

hi- check out this link to see if your hygrometer is working correctly-

http://www.shroomery.org/findorgrowthem/calibrateyourhygrometer.html

remember, according to common understanding from the site and elsewhere- cakes need a rh of about 95%, casings less- 82-92%... also see tmc

Thanks for the link, but my hygrometer's a digital one, not analog...

you can still see if its reading correctly - any deviation from 75% rh means its not, and the difference should be taken into account when reading it. im not sure if you can calibrate the digi's- but this will ease your mind about whether or not its correct...

Might need to have longer intervals between shots of humidity. I got an ultrasonic sittin around in the closet, cause I just couldnt get the damn humidity right with it.. 10 sec with it running usually pushes the humidity up above 95% for a good chunk of time, depending on the terrarium. I ended up switching back to coolmist.
Dont get me wrong, I've heard that it's quite possible, and even beneficial to get it right with an ultrasonic, but I just found it much easier with a coolmist

I used to use a coolmist and water would always collect on my digital hygrometer's sensor and it would always say "HI" (above 95% humidity) Take it out and dry it off and see what happens

That may be the problem-does that mean that I should get an analog one and just calibrate it like in the link above, for best accuracy?
