casings in trouble!
    #944257 - 10/08/02 10:31 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Hello guys,
well my neighbour's cat tried to give it a try with casings but it seems it's having a small problem...
After casing some colonized wheat berries with plain vermiculite and letting the mycelium colonize it to a satisfying extend, it put the casings into their terrarium...
so after 2-3 days in there, the cat is worried about the looks of the casings. The mycelium that has poked through the verm starts to look a bit "unhealthy"... That is, there seem to be many tiny water droplets trapped inside the mycelium "fur" (watery-looking mycelium), although before putting the casings in the terrariums they looked quite ok. The cat is worried because the first 2 days it used to spray a little bit the casings after fanning in order to get the humidity high again (so it is worried if this has hurt the casings).
Please if you know what has happened to the casings, tell the little cat what it should do to avoid failing...
Another thing is that the cat's hygrometer seems to refuse to go over 80% even though there is perlite humid. in the terrariums... so the hygrometer seems not to work correctly even though it passed the salt calibration test successfully...
The cat is confused... Is this appearence of the mycelium bad? If it is, what could be the reason and most importantly what can be done to save the situation?

mmm... thanks vato, the cat figured out that this brand new hygrometer was useless anyway ($15) so she'll try to pick a new one today, yet nobody is certain that the next one will work...
So, is there any other piece of advice to help her save the casings?
She ceased spraying, though she can't judge the humidity acuurately enough to drop it to, say, 85%
well, she hopes that it's all in her mind and that pins will start to appear soon... although she can't stop worrying
