Can I trust my hygrometer?
    #337763 - 06/08/01 11:58 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I just put some ordinary PF cakes in my terrarium (humified with 1.5 inches of perelite) Problem is that the sides of the terrarium are not all that wet. Last time i did this, there were plenty of condensation over the entire inside of my terrarium, now its just some on one side. When I open it up, it seems like the air is really humid though. Anyway, the lack of condensation made me worried, so I bought a digital thermometer/hygrometer. When I put it in the terrarium it quickely rises to 100% rH. How come there are so little condensation then? Shouldnt it be dripping as hell if it were 100%? The temperature in the terrarium is just over 70 fahrenheit, and the hygrometer tells me the rH outside the terrarium in my appartment is 54 (which sounds very reasonable) The perelite seems allright too. Can I trust my hygrometer? Thanks in advance

There is a method somewhere on this site that tells you how to see if the hygrometer is correct. It, I believe is in the documents section but I am too lazy to go find a link. It is pretty easy, it allows you to fine tune the hygrometer and make sure it is set right. I would think that it is alright if there is no condensation, as long as the perlite stays wet and the terrarium isnt opened to allow all the moisture out.
