Opposed, but we have a national ID card now... although it wasn't meant to be.

You have one, I have one. It's called a Social Security card.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

It's been said, but yeah.. we have SS cards. If they were to laminate them, have a section for your driver's license type info... eh I wouldn't really care. I don't wany any kind of technology included though, shit that could track where you go, what you buy, where you're at... etc.

True, you can't do anything without a SS card these days. Does anyone know when the social security card came into being and why?

During FDR's administration. To hijack capitalism and institute a socialist economy.

But you aren't required by law to carry your Social Security card with you at all times. And you are not required to display your Social Security card to a SOL simply because they ask for or demand it.

Even the Hibel case proved you do not have to provide Driver's Liscense or Social Security card only identify yourself, nothing more.

I'd say it's another non-issue being made into a "big deal". As has already been noted, there already is a national ID card (SS card, lol).

That being said, it is most definitely not wise to go any further with this kind of thing. Biometrics scares the hell out of me.

My question is, why do we need one? Are we missing out on something without having one(except, ofcourse, for the SS card?)

We've got a national ID card..

the question is I would say, should we have a new card, required to be on our persons at all times to prove we are who we are?

I'll put this as gently as I can. FUCK THAT.

that was being gentle.

If you break the law and provide false info to the police you'll get in more trouble for it.

If we progress to such a paranoid, ass-sniffing state in this country that I am forced to, on the whim of some power-tripping pig, provide ID (and of course you know they'll ask what you're doing -- so you better be doing something!)..

that's about the time I grab my guns and head for the hills and start kickin' it like it's Mad Max all over again

Sorry I don't know those details, but on my Father's old Social Security card from the early 1960's it says on the front: "For Social Security and Tax Purposes-Not For Identification"
