San Pedro cutting
    #3082437 - 09/02/04 01:26 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I have a two ft. San pedro with a narrow area in the middle. I have decided to take a cutting, so i can eat it. Can anyone tell me how to do this? How do I replinish the apical meristem on the rooted cutting? I have heard adding osmocote causes the plant to scar and keep growing. What angle do I make my cutting?

You will need at least a pound for eating, if legal in your area. Many people prefer a pound and a half or 2 pounds. That's about a 3" wide by 8" long piece, roughly. Skinny pedro is said to be more potent but weighs less so you need a longer piece. Cut at an angle so that water will run off the stump and not pool up. A 45 degree angle will work or even less steep. No need to put anything on it, the stump will scar over. You could dust with sulfer powder but it usually is not needed unless you were having a fungus problem. The stump will put out pups after a few weeks to a few months. You can boost the nitrogen in the ferts a little to encourage pup growth.

Thank you. I have two cacti that are relatively the same size with the same thin in the middle. I left them outside one summer and they didnt get much water so they grew thin. Then I put them back inside and they got thick. So my question is how do I root the cutting?

put it in your dirt. it will root on its own, and probably fairly fast. for columnar cacti cuttings i wait till it scabs and stick in soil. i water about 1/2 the amount that i normally would for the first month to avoid any chance it may rot. i havnt done pedro but it has worked with hundreds of other columnars for me in the past.

Cuttings root faster and grow faster the longer they are in length up to about 18". Ideally your tip cutting should be at least 12", they will still root if they are shorter but the recovery time is MUCH longer - example: I have 6" cuts that are about one years worth of growth behind 12" cuts that I took a year AFTER the 6" cuttings. As far as dose... 12" of 3-4" thick pedro is a good starting point, 24" is a med./strong dose. Hope that helps.

Hey, Mav, sounds like you have a bit of a tollerance. 12" @ 3 to 4" thick is a good couple pounds or more. 24" would be double that. Not many people could get that much down at one sitting. Generally I've found that 1.5 to 2 lb is a good dose for someone who doesn't trip often. If you use psychedelics a lot you might need more like you say.

Uh, 12" really isnt that much. It could be that you had a particularly potent chunk of pedro or torch, but in general 12" wouldnt be anything heroic.

12" skinny isn't much but he said 3 or 4" thick. That will weigh over 2 lb easy. That's not too much but if you double it to 24" then you have 4 or 5lb.

I have a 12" cutting in front of me right now of about 3" thick San Pedro. It weighs just over 800g , once you take out the pith, remove skin and spines it should weigh around 600g. Most common San Pedro is around .35% mescaline content according to studies done by Crosby & McLaughin 1973 , Turner & Heyman 1960. There have been reports of stronger varieties, but these seem to not be the rule. at .35% 600grams would yeild 210mg in a 100% effective extraction. Not a large dose by any means, but a good point to begin with especially with a new substance.
