How do I store fresh San Pedro cuttings?
    #3734450 - 02/05/05 09:28 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I've bought three big San Pedro cuttings which I eventually want to turn into a brew and consume. They are fresh and quite big. Together they weigh 6kg (13.2lbs). How do I store them for a few months?

If you're going to do that, you might as well chop off the top 4-6 inches (or more if you can spare it) of each one, callous them off and plant them in some rich, well drained soil. If you don't do that, then as soon as you put those suckers in your closet or wherever, they're gonna keep on growing anyway, exept the tips will turn into very thin, white growths which point upwards no matter which way the cactus is positioned. If you cut off the tops, it'll stunt the growth pretty much but the cacti will still be alive for a looooong time to come and it should boost alkaloid concentrations if you have them in the dark with no water (obviously).

At any rate, make sure that the open wound areas have calloused (dried off) before you put them anywhere that they could go moldy. And don't be surprised when they start growing roots and small pups after a couple of months or so...it's normal.

What kind of soil/fertilezers should I use for this?
And what do you mean by "callous them off"
Thanks!

You want a well draining soil... sand, limestone, pumice are good additions to top soil. Fertilize with a general purpose fertilizer twice a month in growing season. Callous means to let the tip cutting dry out and form a scab on it. Takes a week or so. Definately save as much as you can afford to. You can have a garden of magical cacti that will continue to bring you good things. The tip is the life. 4-6" can be a bit difficult to root, The longer cutting the better, a 6" cutting will reach 12" in a year but a 12" will reach 24" in a year. If you eat it all now, the plants life and ability to give back to you ends, but if you take some and let the rest continue to grow it can continue to produce more for you. Good luck.
