perlite

in my chamber does perlite need to be put in the oven before i put it in the bottom? and do i set them on the lids or on the perlite

you can bake it in the oven and that will clean it from contams, though its kinda hard for your cakes to get contamed after they are fully colonized.

take the perlite and make a layer on the bottom of your fruiting chamber as thick as you want, and then pour it into a bucket, and soak it in water. strain it out, and just put it back into the terrarium. you can add a bit of water, but the thing with perlite is that it floats, so putting a layer of water is kinda BS because it doesnt work, just get the perlite soaked and maybe add a bit of water
if you want. this should work good for a couple of weeks, at least until your done with your cakes, then you can take the perlite and bake it clean again and what not. up to you. some people dont clean their perlite at all, others change it every 2 weeks, just whatever you wanna do.

In cake mix with brf, can you use perlite instead of vermiculite, same thing, or very different???

Some People *have had success using perlite, but it really isn't good at all. It is strongly suggested you not try this, and wait till you can get some vermiculite.

2in. perlite 1in. water.What the tek calls for.I also add some h2o2.

Is it possible for a fully colonized cake to become contaminated? Just curious because my cakes are sitting right on the perlite and I didn't use h202 for fear that it would kill my cakes. But I've also read that it's very difficult for a healthy cake to contaminate. Now I'm confused.

10:1 water:h2o2 is what u need to use because a fully colonized cake can become contamed.

That is so untrue.

I used to use perlite straight out of the bag with plain tap water.

Well, Biotek is kind of right.  If it is coming straight from an UNOPENED bag in theory it should be uncontaminated, as it must be properly processed before it is sold.  Althogh I don't think it is a good idea, it is possible to use it straight from the bag without problems, I've seen it done quite a few times.  If you are reusing it you should definately resterilize though.  Also, I recommend leaving your cakes sitting on the lids, just one more way to avoid contams...peace :smile:

An obvious concern with the perlite technique is sterilization. Intuitively, it just doesn't seem right that one would work so hard to make sure the grow chamber is sterilized correctly, and then dump a big wet pile of unsterilized perlite in the bottom. I've never sterilized or added H202 to the stuff and have never had problems with it.
