when using perlite for humidity do you need to sterilize

im planning on using a rubber maid container and putting a perlite in the bottom then birthing cakes on top of that do i need to sterilize the perlite?is this just as good as using the dual chambered terrarium!

Sterilizing the perlite is not necessary. I Recommend wetting the perlite, adding it, then adding some h2o2 to kill any spores that might be lurking.  The last question is very subjective :smile: It'll keep your humidity up, monitor that and keep your air exchange up and you'll be fine.

I like the advice of using iodine with perlite rather than H2O2:

Sanitizing Perlite: It is reported that Perlite may be reused by washing in tap water, draining, rinsing with a solution of 9 parts clean water and one part bottled Hydrogen Peroxide, H2O2... What's up with that ? H202 is a very weak sanitizer.? Perilite may also be boiled or baked after rinsing. Recently I have taken to soaking used Perlite in iodized water: About 10 drops of Tincture of Iodine in a gallon of water, soak Perlite 20 minutes, drain, and re-use. I do not allow my cakes or casings to contact the Perlite directly. This Sanitizer is much more effective against Trich Spores than H2O2, and does not produce fumes like bleach.

Only if reusing , or if bag has been left open .
When companies make perilite they heat to over 800*F , so it should be sterile out of the bag .
Adding some peroxide to the distilled water will aid in keeping nasty invaders from growing in the bowl . A 20:1 ratio is fine (20 parts water to 1 part h202 )
