? on perlite & humidity

hey all

when my friend's gerbil used BRF & verm. as the substrate perlite humidification worked great. after reading up on the rye teks i got the impression that perlite provided too much humidity to grow rye w/ 50/50+ casing. could someone tell me why it is ok for BRF and verm. but not for cased rye. thanks
