Perlite and Humidity
    #1189824 - 01/04/03 10:45 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

My jars should be ready to fruit in a couple days and I want to go ahead and make sure the chamber will have the right humidity. I put about an inch and a half of perlite in and added water, too much it turned out. I left the hygrometer in there for a couple hours and got a 99% humidity reading. So I drained a good deal of water, tried again, and got another 99% reading when I took the lid off. Drained more water so the bottom of the container was wet, but had no standing water, and its still 99%. Any suggestions to lower humidity? Should I just dump it all out and put in fresh perlite and add just a bit of water?

Thanks,
Stu

If you are fruiting cakes that will work just fine.

thats the good thing about perlite! very high humidity with very little effort,
the perlite is doing what it shoud do, if you put fresh stuff in it will only do the same

if you are fruiting cakes this is a good thing, for a casing you want a slightly lower humidity (try opening the lid a crack)

That is good. Besides the humidity will lower when you do things such as fanning and misting.

Thanks for the help. So if 99% is okay, I should be birthing the cakes in a day or two.  Exciting, because this is my first time growing. I asked because I remembered reading somewhere that one of the more common mistakes was too much humidity when using perlite.  Of course, now when I went back to look where I read that I can't find it.

You want high humidity for cakes.
So 99% is great.

You don't want high humidity for casings....after the pinning stage.

I was wondering the same thing. I am about to do a casing, but I was wondering what to do about the humidity.

Just put it into your fruiting chamber. No perlite, no humidifiers, no nothing. Just the cakes. They supply their own humidity. And make sure to supply proper air exchange.

My cat always has perlite on the bottom of his fruiting chamber. The containers are pretty deep, and if the casings were left to fill the container with humidity three times daily after fanning, I imagine they would dry out quickly (especially with the super dry air in the house right now).

Doing this keeps the casing damp longer, minimizing misting. He doesn't keep standing water in the bottom of the chamber - just dumps about a gallon of water into the bag, shakes, and dumps it in the bottom.

There is a 1" hole cut into the side of the container just above where a bag of perlite fills. The hole has a filter disc glued over it. This allows some passive gas exchange and also allows some humidity to leak out.
