I never read the original post, but I do recognize both the title and the little bit that Frog quoted as being from a commencement address given by Ayn Rand to the graduating class at West Point in 1974.

Definitely worth re-reading. Unfortunately, I doubt the entire address is available online. However, a collection of her essays by the same title -- Philosophy: Who Needs It -- is readily available. Any decent library should have it.

Wow! That is indeed the entire address. I'm astonished. I know Rand was a firm believer in intellectual rights, which is why there are many quotes and excerpts from her works online, but almost no entire works.

You might want to copy that to your hard drive just in case. It may not be there forever.
