Can temps also get 2 high? I'm using a heating mat, so this can heat up the casings quite a bit. But I suppose it can also speed the colonisation up. When they are pinning, and I would place the heating mat under the terrarium filled with 2cm layer of perlite moistened with water, would the heating mat cause to high humidity? Because it is directly under the moist perlite I suppose it would cause the moist to evaporate. As the casings just fit (five) in the terrarium they woul hold up the moist a little but it doesn't close it all! So is it possible or does it create a humidity like 99%?

Oh one thing I forgot, after the mycelium pops through the casinglayer, lower temps? cold shocking? I know daylight is enough to initiate pinning but what temp???

Is your terrarium airtight? If not, humidity should never get that high...if you are using a removable lid, try offsetting it with an inch or so crack, because like you hypothesized the warmer temps will evaporate more of the water in the perlite than lower temps. 72-75F(room temp.) should be sufficient, so unless you are growing a warm loving strain like the Asians, you really don't need the heating pad once you are ready to pin em. Okay, after reading both replies: The terrarium I use isn't air tight as I seal with plastic foil with holes in it for air ventilation. The terrarium is opened every day for fresh air. The heating pad has only one heating temp, so no fluctuations are expected. What about applying the heating pad to the side of the terrarium???? So ecuadors don't need cold shock and room temp to initiate pinning, okay, but as I grow on an attic where temps are lower than room temp (and higher in summer)! So I might wanna stick to my heating pad for now, but not on the bottom due to the evaporation of water in the perlite! Thanks guy's, don't know what to do without you: a lot of trial and a lot of error! greetz, will post results when pinning is initiated!

dude, lay your heat pad on the ground, table, whatever & put some cardboard peices on top of the pad and place your terrarium on top of the cardboard.... the more cardboard layers you add, the more control of the temperature you will have. to calibrate how many pieces of cardboard you will need: lay a thermometer on top of the perlite and add more cardboard to regulate & lower the temp. with less temp, there is less evap. B.T.W... you gotta find a sterile place to put your cakes/casings while you are calibrating... and dont forget to stearilize the terrarium with h202. b4 returning the shroomz to thier home. ~fortyounces2freedom~ & ~disconnectedhaze~

If you are trying to simulate a natural growing environment, you don't want the heat source coming from the bottom.. After all, the sun doesn't shine or heat the earth from the core, does it? Also, PadoHolland: Even with the insulation in the attic, the temps. aren't at around room temp? What is the average temp. in the Netherlands this time of year?

Okay, first warmth is all around you not directly from above, it can also be warm when cloudy. So the warmth pad should make temps around room temp, further zip, by applying to the walls of the terrarium direct contact can be avoided, with cardboard also, think I'm gonna do the cardboard. The average temp. in the netherlands aroun this time a year would be around 15?C (forgot how to caculate to F) but that's less than room temp. think we have a problem with heating 1/2 a year, because temps are really too low at the attic, we've seen it because we have placed them at higher temps also (bedroom), so now we are counting on temps to rise comming months so heating isn't nescesarry anymore (only for colonisation of jars and casings).

That was precisely my point...heat from the sun radiates through the atmosphere and clouds to heat the ground, like a gigantic greenhouse. The ground absorbs its heat from above, so evaporation or condensation naturally occurs from an above ground heating source...

Okay, so not from under but around the shrooms heat should be applied, will look this weekend how things will be constructed, will make some pictures asap!
