A very important question regarding electric cars
    #3057293 - 08/27/04 11:09 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

We all know that there are electric cars out there, how they work and how efficient they are is an area of debate.

But my question is this: is it possible, giving allowance to the current technological state, to build an electric plane or a boat?

I'm not so sure about planes, if you think it can be done feel free to write about it.

But boats are quite probable. Perhaps some sort of catamaran similar to the one in "Water world" movie would be more appropriate. One would need to install a good array of solar panels, get a cutting edge accumulator and energy efficient motor. What you have is a vessel that can travel unlimited distances.

Do you think it is possible?

Easily obtainable materials. What about power, would solar panels provide enough power to propel a boat?

There are already electric boats. The problem is electric is a real bitch to generate real true power. So the cost outweighs the benefits except in small craft. Thats why electric cars are tiny, have little weight, and have no real horsepower overall.

Just cause the boat is electric dosent mean it has to be solar. Solar power sucks batteries are better.

Fast electric car link,
http://www.acpropulsion.com/tzero_pages/tzero_home.htm

If you jump up to the home page, you'll find a link to an prototype electric plane.

Very little... one cool thing about electric motors is they have a near constant torque over rpm curve... this translates into no transmission needed... which means that an electric car will almost always outperform a cumbusion based car during acceleration from zero.

The one that I saw was an old car chasis with an electric motor added. The rest of the car was filled with batteries. They didn't even have an off switch... simply short across the batteries and bow the fuse. (This was for a world speed record, not city driving.)

More of a problem with plane and boats is the transfer of power to motion...it's very easy in a car, as you're pushing against a solid surface...in a boat or plane, you're moving fluids, which is much less efficient.

However, an electric boat with an onboard generator would be nice. Think hybrid, but without the stupid-as-shit idea of locking together the two motors. A totally separate 4 stroke Briggs and Stratton can develop more than enough enough electrical power for such a system.

If you're thinking of building one, look into high-efficiency impeller designs (it would need to be a jet boat). Your normal water prop wastes enormous amounts of energy.

Nice hypercube, Zeuss. :o)

After contacting a few vendors and looking at some motors awhile back, I determined that it would cost me about $80K to build out a shelled RX-7 into a 600 HP, 500 ft-lb direct-drive beast of a machine.  This includes a power plant (20 HP Briggs & Stratton 4-stroke) charging the batteries and running the motors.  The batteries are only drained during high accelleration (four motors, each pulling 300 amps).

This doesn't involve very many manufactured components...most of the power handling is custom, all the feedback from the motors is computer-controlled, etc.  I was looking at doing it on a budget.

The car would weigh quite a bit more than stock, totalling almost 3600 lb.  Do the math and you'll realize it's a bat out of hell.

[edit]If anyone has a shelled car and $80K to blow, contact me...I'd be more than happy to see my ideas take shape.  Unfortunately nobody except the patent holders (*cough*fucking oil companies*cough*) can sell hybrid technology, so I could only tell you how or build it with your money...[/edit]
