IP questions
    #838839 - 08/23/02 07:12 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

What is the real likelyhood of Ip addresses of users on this site being accessed by law enforcement?? Sorry, despite working in the industry, i dont know much about this kind of thing.

I don't know even if they did my guess is it wouldn't be too helpful unless you were on a static IP.......... and even then those could be proxys........ i could be wrong tho......

I know they can decide to monitor a certain site and log all ip addresses
of people who access the site. This is done at the sites internet provider.
Then they can find your internet provider and get your name from your ip.I don't
know if they would get your login name and tie it to your ip.They could but it would
be more involved.

Will they?Who knows.

yeah but if you're on dial up your IP changes so if they had
*.*.*.44 they would have to give that IP and the time and date to your ISP and they would have to say so and so was online at that time...... Even to try to get that info from your ISP they would need a warrent of some kind I believe to subpena those records ??????????? If i'm saying anything that makes sense.....

You are right they do need a warrant.
Here is a small snippet about it.

http://www.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/09/06/carnivore.hearing/

In the past, the FBI relied solely on pen-registers or "trap and trace" wiretaps to produce lists of the telephone numbers of people who placed calls to suspects. Those methods are now applied to the collection of e-mail or IP (Internet Protocol) addresses that are available, provided that investigators are armed with a court order.

They may not need a warrant.

http://www.wired.com/news/conflict/0%2C2100%2C48711%2C00.html

Previously, federal law said that "a cable operator shall not disclose personally identifiable information concerning any subscriber." Section 211 of the USA Patriot Act changes the law to read: "A cable operator may disclose such information if the disclosure is ... to a government entity."

Other USA Patriot Act sections mean that police can obtain an Internet Protocol address, which identifies a cable modem subscriber, as readily as they can learn someone's telephone number.

So if the fbi got a court order saying the shroomery is promoting
illegal acivity, they could log all the IP addresses and then go to the ISPs
of each user and get your name and address. Then come and get you and take
you away.

yeah due to the nine eleven event they are giving more authority and power to get "terrorists" but will probably use it to get drug offenders etc as well......

Finding an IP is easy, finding your internet providers location can be done by anyone. If your provider is in your city thats not a good thing.

Check out all the neato stuff anyone can find out about you http://leader.ru/secure/who.html , here too http://privacy.net/analyze/ .

Makes you feel safe doent it....

Yeah the fbi doesnt need a warrant now to set up a wire tap. They are currently working on that carnivore program, which would allow them to monitor anyone basically without the person(s) knowing. And say if your using AT&T to connect to the internet, they could sniff from their main switch which your logged into and monitor all your data, and the rest of the customers out there.

If you guys are wondering how the FBI's Carnivore program works, go to http://www.howstuffworks.com/carnivore.htm, it's pretty detailed, not sure on how accurate it is, but I think it's trustworthy.

Yeah - ive read similar - my interest was tracing an IP from a post on a forum. Sure they could link all the Ips that enter and exit, but how would they know for sure who was posting what??

That really depends on how the bulletin board is set up. I believe UBB can be set up to keep the ip with the post, but im not sure if thats always set by default. If it is then they have to have some way to access the log files to check who posted what on what date... so i doubt its possible... but when theres a will theres a way.

Our host logs all users who access our server, but the BB software does not log your IPs.

If you are concerned about your IP being found out, use some anon programs, or don't access this site

I dont know which bulliten board this is, but I do know that their webserver will log your ip (usually found under /var/logs). Also almost every major ISP has what can be thought of as an invisible proxy which logs all traffic. Some of these machines go so far as to analyize conversations, and flag those which need human reading.

The shroomery doesnt log ip's per username, and im pretty sure the webserver doesnt keep access logs. For the man to get your ip, he would need to get a warrent of some sort to seize the server, then setup something to get your ip, then contact your isp with the warrant, and get your personal information. Its a long process, that they wont really do unless they need to.

I don't know if this will answer your question but it gives some insight into IP's and lookup information. I use whois.arin.net for looking up ip blocks on linux machines.
ARIN is the 'American Registry for Internet Numbers'.

I look for something like this: ***NOTE THE # is the prompt and not actually typed - the only thing I've typed is the line right after the #

#whois www.shroomery.org
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.shroomery.org
Address: 66.221.98.80

That shows me the ip address for the www record for shroomery.org.

Now I can see where it is hosted by this:

#whois -h whois.arin.net 66.221.98.80
OrgName: C I Host
OrgID: CIHS

NetRange: 66.221.0.0 - 66.221.255.255
CIDR: 66.221.0.0/16
NetName: CIHOST7
NetHandle: NET-66-221-0-0-1
Parent: NET-66-0-0-0-0
NetType: Direct Allocation
NameServer: NS.CIHOST.COM
NameServer: NS2.CIHOST.COM

# ARIN Whois database, last updated 2002-09-12 19:05
# Enter ? for additional hints on searching ARIN's Whois database.

So CIHOST would be the place to start looking ... If I was a govt agent looking for shroomery info I would go to www.cihost.com, look for contact numbers, get the number for Management, get the information for Christopher Faulkner CEO and probably Daniel Fairchild, Chief Security Engineer. Find the ips that logged into the shroomery and posted under whatever particular time, don't believe the hype it CAN be done ... then do the same whois lookup for that ip and see what ISP that user has and go from there.

I know my ISP does require a warrant for any information given regarding who had what ip address at any particular time. I can't speak for them all tho.
