Not really.

Creating life in a lab would mean setting up conditions under which, without the goading of any of us, things start to piece themselves together to form something kinda alive.

already have had amino acids form up spontaniously in lab conditions. years ago. get a glass bubble thing, fill it with the chemicals and whatnot found in the very early earth, agitate a bit to simulate tides and storms and whatnot, simulate volcanic activity and throw in some lightning.. and out they come.

Something that is highly unlikely still can happen perfectly well on its own without some old coot on a cloud telling it to happen that way. People still win the lottery, right? Probability doesn't mean something will or will not happen, nor even how long you may have to wait for it to happen. It's simply a way of guesttimating without completely making up an estimate.

yeah, but setting those conditions up in a lab and making it happen does not take conscious intent out of the equation...

there's no concious intent involved -- the shit reacts, just the same as it does if no one is watching and if no one wanted it to happen.

Stick that, and a bunch of other crap together, and add in lightning and geothermal and tidal activity, and all of a sudden there's concious intent to create life?

I believe that life could occur randomly in response to a set of conditions. I also think that it's formation is inevitable.

That's conscious intent right there. If you're sticking them in a beaker to see what happens, that's intent.

Similarly, if you fine-tune the conditions in a lab to allow life to come into existance, you're doing it consciously and with the intent of creating life.

It wouldn't affect my theories one bit.

More and more, as I learn about this Universe we live in, I think that Life is just another example of self-organization in the Universe. I think that self-organization and syncronization is one of the deepest and most basic aspects of our Universe: it has alowed an evolution from a nearly uniform cloud of gas to the vast complexities that we see today (Life).

I think Life is inevitable in this Universe. There is no way that Life could not have happened, and it probably has happened in many many other parts of the Universe.

Well it would raise the possibility for me that WE are a lab experiment as well.

But it still would leave me wondering "ok so we did have a creator - alien Bob and his assistant Ted have created the universe as we know it... but how the hell did Bob and Ted get there?"
