Validating Opinions
    #3036989 - 08/22/04 05:32 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Today, at work, I was operating the merry-go-round(I work at a kids' amusement park. Insert carnie jokes here), and this one girl on the ride started crying. Following standard operating procedure, I stopped the ride to let the girl off. Her dad then told me that she was crying because her seat belt had come off. He then got in my face about not having checked the seat belts properly. After strapping her in and finishing up the ride, I let everyone off, and one guy that came off said to me, "That guy's an ass. Don't worry about it."

This was oddly comforting to hear. The fact that this guy concurred with my opinion that the other guy was, in fact, an ass, seemed to excuse me from having to question whether or not I was in the wrong. Funny how we base our reality on people agreeing with us, isn't it?

People don't usually agree with me, but my reality is still intact.

What does it mean when people don't agree with you but you still think you're right?  Does this mean I am crazy?

I think Freud would consider you one of the few sane ones.  Of course, this is because he himself measured how right his ideas were by how many people disagreed with him.

Even though this should please me, wasn't Freud, in fact, crazy???

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Okay, I did some quick research. It confirmed what I thought. Freud might have been crazy, but most geniuses are.

Freud had a little cocaine problem, but that didn't make him crazy, did it? I forgot about all the theories he came up with. And, when you consider that his ideas are still debated even a century later, then there must have been at least some validity.

Crazy is a rather non-specific term. Freud was not as rational during his hardcore cocaine addiction days as during his sober period.

That was a great topic to raise awarness on Silver! If a republican speaks at a republic convention, most there will agreee with his views and at a democrtic convention, most won't.

If a Pagan speaks at a pagan church most will agree with his views and at a christian church, most won't.

Just because a lot of people agree with your thoughts and opinions doesn't mean that you are in absolute right. It really doesn't mean anything. It supports the notion that birds of a feather flock together and Sludge sticks to sludge so ..............................

I appreciate how you pointed out the narrow thinking in that.  It is a silly measure to test and judge the validity of your own beleifs on.

You shouldn't rely on others so much to validate your opinions. How crushed would you have been if the guy said you were an ass for not properly doing your job?
