Frozen Substrate?
    #2991971 - 08/11/04 06:07 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

i searched and couldnt find anything usefull...

when making up my last batch of jars i ended up coming short by about three jars, so i whipped up some more substrate real fast but then of course i was over by a little bit. i didnt want to just throw it out so i stuck it in a zip lock bag and stuffed it in the freezer, figuring it was better than nothing. if i thawed this out would it still be useable if i make another batch of jars, or should i just get rid of it now and save myself the heartbreak?

i suppose i should mention, it was grain and rice.

i would have chucked it, the stuff is pretty cheap anyway and who needs that freezer space being taken up...toss the clutter!!

it is still a viable food source for mushies. the only problem is, the water content is prolly off now.

ive got absolutely nothing in my freezer anyhow, so i dont miss the space.

as for the water... there is quite a bit condensed on the bag and frozen. i wonder how much would be reabsorbed properly upon thawing...

i was thinking of just throwing it in with my manuer and straw when it comes casing time, the altered water content wouldnt be that bad if i did, would it?

don't mix it in with a casing layer, they are supposed to be devoid of nutrition. as for reabsorption, it's hard to say.... you would be better off just tossing it, unless you plan on doing an outdoor that is.

i didnt mean the casing layer, i have coir for casing, i meant in the bulk substrate mixed in with manuer and straw -- then cased with coir. sorry, im not talking clearly.
