Frozen Mushrooms
    #1392756 - 03/19/03 07:55 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Hey,

I'm getting some mushrooms soon but they're frozen. I've just read that this is bad, is there any point in still getting them if they're frozen or would I just need to get more?

If it is still worth getting them then what the hell do I do with them to prepare them for ingestion?

Any responses will be hugely appreciated.

Thank you - Lauren

george costanza: Why eat more?? and Eat more than what ??
If they were frozen fresh then if they remain frozen until use they will be as potent as they were fresh...

Besides "frozen" kinda implies that they were frozen wet because other than becoming very cold a dried mushroom doesnt change much when it is frozen..

So whats the answer?? If they are frozen fresh make sure they stay frozen until you use them... be aware that if there were any bacteria they are probably still there so you should prepare it as a tea..

If they were frozen dried I'd still leave them in the freezer

Actually, it makes a HUGE difference if they were frozen fresh or dried.

If frozen dried, you're in luck. You'll have well preserved mushrooms.

If frozen fresh, you'd better try eating them frozen because as soon as they begin to thaw they will turn into a black mushy mess. I know, I've accidently frozen fresh mushrooms and it's 95% likely that they will be ruined. There's an outside shot that you can dry them on a dehydrator quickly and prevent the decay, but I've only had limited success and the mushrooms were far less 'tasty.'

be well

What i was saying was that if they were frozen dried the freezing will not alter the mushroom as it does when fresh...

When a mushroom is frozen slowly as in a regular freezer the water expands as it freezes and breaks cell walls.. so that when it thaws and the mushroom no longer has the structure of the frozen water it does become mushie and useless...
thats why I said if they are Frozen make sure they stay frozen until use... and if u use them preapre them in a tea.

I have used frozen mushrooms many times and have not had problems in terms of potency... they were 100% as potent as when picked.. but they were used STRAIGHT out of the freezer.
