Your thoughts on the proposed Bill C-22? * 1
    #29705669 -

Hello. A brief introduction to what Bill C-22 is all about (feel free to search for more info):

Canada’s current federal Bill C-22 is the Lawful Access Act, 2026. It would expand the ability of the police and the CSIS to obtain digital information through updated legal channels.

Key proposals include:

New tools to request confirmation that a person uses a service and to obtain subscriber information.

Requirements for electronic service providers to maintain technical capabilities that support authorized access.
Rules for examining computer data.

As of October 23, 2026, it was at second reading in the Senate. These measures concern access under legal authority; the bill’s details and safeguards are set out in the legislation and may change as it proceeds.

There have been arguments from both sides. On one side, coming from the police and the CSIS, they say that they need more power to investigate digital crimes. On the other hand, there are also concerns from civil liberties group, such as Open Media, Canadian civil liberties associations, the Justice Centre for Constitutional freedom, tech companies and major digital service providers, who say that this law, in its current form, has many problem areas such as the following:

Privacy and surveillance: Expanded access to subscriber details and other digital information could make it easier to identify and track people, potentially with insufficient judicial oversight.

Cybersecurity: Requirements for providers to support lawful access could pressure them to weaken security or create technical vulnerabilities that hackers or hostile actors might exploit.

Broad reach: The bill’s definitions may cover a wide range of service providers, not just traditional phone or internet companies.

Vague powers and limited transparency: Critics worry that ministerial orders and unclear terms could give authorities broad discretion, with too little public scrutiny.
Costs for providers: Companies may have to build and maintain compliance systems, bearing costs and security risks.

Personally, I am against this bill, mainly because I believe it would give the government even more power to watch citizens. They actually already had a predecessor bill that died in the house, it's called C-2. Feel free to look it up. It was blasted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation as well. It seems to me like they just keep trying and trying. They fall down, then get back up and try again. I am a firm believer in that we need to give the law enforcement and intelligence agencies updated tools to fight cyber crimes, however, not at the expense of regular Canadians who have done nothing wrong. What say you?

I don't have the technical knowledge to posit how they'd allow authorized access without compromising security, but that's a big one with AI entering the scene. Lots of bad actors from the usual shitholes.
It all sounds pretty risky and I'm generally opposed but we do need to have the tools to go after domestic crimes and even sketchy international shit.

Thank you for the reply sir, and my response to this bill is mostly same as yours.  I don't know enough to know what it would take to go after the bad actors without jeopardizing the regular people,  so what I do is, I follow various civil liberties group who act as watchdog groups on government overreach,  such as Open Media (https://openmedia.org/), Canadian civil liberties association (https://ccla.org/), British Columbia civil liberties association (https://bccla.org/), Canadian constitution foundation (https://theccf.ca/), Justice centre for Constitutional freedom (https://www.jccf.ca/), both to get updates as well as to absorb information on how this bill would play out.  I have also signed their petitions and i also emailed my objections to 105 senators.  I highly recommend that you take concrete steps to help contribute to these campaigns.

May I ask you if you have tried talking to the people in your life about this bad bill?  Like, friends and family?  Maybe if they knew, they would be against it, too, and we always need more voices on our side.
