That big one does seem to be producing spores though. I bet if you printed it for 12+ hours you would get usable amounts. Swabbing the gills would probably work too.

Trying to print it now, thanks for the advice.

The shrooms smell very good btw, just like the mycelium. Very sweet with a lot of anise and a little fennel and cumin.

Man absolutely killer fruits. Very jealous. Can you describe or show me how big that fruiting block is? Is it just 3 pints of material all together? If so, I need to do another grow with less material for fun. I also was never successful in adding wood products, but you’re using different hardwoods than I did.

Great work though, absolutely beautiful

The bags I use are 5"x6"x20". The block is usually around 3" depth, so total block size is 5"x6"x3".

With hardwoods I've had success with beech and oak, and with blended pellets such as the current maple/cherry/hickory blend. For conifer wood I've used douglas fir bark for species like stuntzii.

I've never really had good success with alder even though I always find mushrooms in my area growing in alder mulch. :shrug:

I remember when I first saw Gymnopilus in a mushroom ID book decades ago, I was sure I could find them in the woods! This is so cool.

There is another Gym species with some beautiful purple colours that I saw being cultivated?

The species I went with is Luteofolius.
I had started with two shoeboxes way earlier, comprised of popcorn spawn and HWFP.
Both failed, so I'll be using my own hardwood I prep from now on.

I started on again on agar plates, moved to grain and lumber in jars. Jars took,
more or less, a month to finish. Incubating them at sorta warmish temps;
75-77 degrees F. and fruiting them @ cooler room temps around 71-74.
Cased with CVG on March 18th.

Pins appeared exactly 14 days later, then for me, took a little over a week to mature/flat-cap.
All in a modified polyfil tub. I did not notice any difference with
24h light and 12/12h light.
I got pins on April 1st, what an amazing gift for that day huh? :lol:

The mycelium is a little sensitive it seems and can easily blue.
They're BEAUTIFUL, their smell is pleasant, and truly are bitter tasting.
Mutated specimens seem to be a common thing with them during
the first tiny "wave/flush" it seems?

Still new to this genus and species. Dunked for 14-15 hours and waiting for
wave 2 to come. Hopefully even bigger! I like the subtle bluing at the
base of the stipes.

Have you tried seeing if their is a specific time duration to observe bluing by taking a few specimens of various ages and cutting them in half from top to bottom?

Some pics of what eventually happened with my grow before I had to move things outside due to fungal gnats.



I had 3 bags of Scotts mulch that I never got around to spreading last summer, so I cut them open and buried a substrate in each one. A couple of them were already pretty heavily colonized by something, and I wasn't sure how much energy the substrates had left given they were 6 months old at that point, but low and behold:



Pins in May... October would be the normal time of year for this species in my area, but at least there are signs of life. I'm expecting these to abort, but I wonder how far they'll make it.

Other thoughts: Shoeboxes are probably impractical for G. subspectabilis. These things get huge. I went from lids on, to dub-tubbed, to water-tubbed inside a 16 qt. container. That one giant one hit the lid and started going sideways, so I switched to a second inverted 16 qt. tub. One evening as we were watching TV, I heard a crash coming from the direction of the room they were in. It had pushed the top 16 qt. container off and onto the floor! So eventually that one went into a 56 qt. tub.

I relied solely on ambient light, but I should have provided better lighting. In the wild, G. subspectabilis will grow ridiculously long convoluted stems to emerge from hollow logs or tree stumps before expanding the cap. The stems on what I managed to grow did the same thing because I didn't give them enough light.

In the end, I harvested a little over 1 kg fresh from 3 shoeboxes. I also discarded over 500 g of mutant blobs and aborted pins. In the hands of someone who actually knew what they were doing, I imagine the results could be pretty spectacular. Lots of fun, and not bad for a first attempt though!

Cool idea. I haven't tried this though, mostly because
for me it seems like only some of the Luteofoli. fruits bruise blue some of the time. Not as readily or heavily as Cubensis or Pan. Cyanescens.
Cutting them small pins in half might be difficult, maybe using
an Xacto might help! :cool:

After dunking for 14-15 hours, it was great! But then a week later
unfortunately, right during this pinset, it had to be compost pile'd :sad:

It is true, they don't seem to need a casing layer.
There was a shoebox I had however, that colonized the casing layer.
Not just that, it was bruising a bit and rather than risking damaging
the mycelium more or stressing it out, tried to fix it.
April 13 2026

NOW the flush was subpar, so I guessed a late casing layer might amend such.
Also the mycelium-covered casing was becoming subtly blue from gentle
misting. The late casing seemed to help.
I sprinkled on some pure, dry vermiculite (mycelium already had water droplets)
during mid-flush and let it continue.
Cased now, April 13th

The fruits got bigger and more healthy & happier looking.
I figured it could and should work but I sort of doubted that.
Viola? Lesson learned? I think, I dunno.
5 days later. Results may vary
Honestly I had an utter blast, especially once I was seeing pins popping
out for the first time ever for me!


This particular photo is cool, the camera doesn't do it justice.
The area with missing casing and just nothing but mycelium ISN'T white!
It's an extremely light baby blue! Beautiful :ooo:

Hello all! It's been quite a while. Awesome to see everyone's grows from the time I've been gone. Life has been very busy and I've been neglecting the spore plates that I made after my last failure for almost 3/4 of a year now. 1 or 2 ended up with obvious contam but a lot of them look alright to my extremely untrained eye. A couple even look very nice in my very humble opinion, and I was hoping to get the opinions of someone with a bit more experience than I. These are Gym. Luteus plates from spores that I made last November. They didn't show signs of doing much of anything in my very cold house until late spring when they started growing a lot more. A lot of them stalled out over this summer, but the most promising one has started growing little blobs on the surface slowly this summer.

Here are the two best plates imo lit top and bottom:


I say best because they have the densest growth, which is not really done justice by the photos. But also because they are growing small blobs around the densest sections that I assume are the beginnings of pins. Again, just the suppositions of a complete amateur.

These are unfortunately the best pictures I could get, and I did really try. The lids are not perfectly clear to begin with and they've accumulated a lot of hard water stains on the undersides. They're also just a bit foggy from the condensation. They are significantly easier to see through in person which is particularly frustrating. It feels like I should be able to get better pictures because my eyes can see them so clearly, but I suppose the optical sensors in my head are just better than the one in my phone. Or maybe the computer in my head is better at error correcting.

Excited to hear what someone with more experience thinks. Wouldn't be surprised if all I've grown is contam again. Of course I'd be thrilled to hear that I've got some good transfer candidates, but I've tempered my expectations. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to offer their opinions. Happy growing everyone!

last year i found this specimen and took a print from it. i just poured my first plates. i still want to wait until I got my technique down to give this one a try. do you think it’s worth to work with this one?

Easier to determine growth on fresh plates dude. You can see clear definition of it growing out a lot easier and can judge if it's behavior is ideal or not.

I'm back and I've been following a new policy of confidence lately. Instead of worrying that I'm cultivating mold and doing nothing, I've decided to embrace potentially growing mold and just do things. At the very least I'll gain some experience isolating cultures, even if the cultures I'm isolating are mold.

I took some transfers from my old plates in the last post and for the most part they all looked really nice to me. I had a couple go bacterial, and learned a valuable lesson about pouring my plates below the filter holes. I also noticed that my modified plates with filter holes were growing a lot faster than my plates without them. It was an admittedly small sample size, but the correlation with plates that were getting fresh air and plates that were growing fast was 100%. I had swapped to mostly running my plates unmodified because it was a pain to change the filters each time, but now I'm all in on the modified plates. Anyway, I decided that in the spirit of confidence, I was just going to take my best plates and make some new transfers last night. Those new transfers are already starting to reach out onto the fresh agar just a little, which is exciting. Both the last set of transfers and these new ones seem to be growing with a lot more vigor than the initial spore plates and I'm taking that as a good sign.

Excited to share my progress so here's a pic of one of the plates I took transfers from last night. The new one's aren't very photogenic at the moment, but I made a slight adjustment to my agar prep that should make them a lot nicer to photograph once the condensation clears and the cultures expand. I realized that the layer of potato flakes at the bottom of every plate were probably hurting the fidelity of my pictures, and saw milkboy's clear agar tek float to the top of the forum which gave me some ideas for my own process.
