Should I drill a 12mm hole (for custom LC lids) to accommodate 13mm diameter Syringe filters?
    #29657771 -

I'm thinking that would be more snug. Yay or nay?

Personally i wouldn´t.
Syringe filters are an unnecessary contam vector to me.
I use lab bottles for LC, free pour and single use.
Lids unmodified.

Yeah, i use Self healing injection ports and i make the hole smaller than the port itself and it squeezes in there since its rubber

I would just drill a 1/4" hole and use a synthetic filter disc sticker, taped with micropore. It's all you need really. Syringe filters are unweildy and vestigial for the most part.

Thanks for the tips!

A few questions:

Goatrider - Do you leave the lids cracked on those unmodified media bottles? How do you achieve gas exchange? Do inoculate with colonized agar chunks? Also, what are you typically free pouring into?

Fiddlehead - Are you drawing from the synthetic filter disc taped with micropore, and simply retaping after use? Or do you prefer to use up the jar in one go?

You can keep the cap all the way cinched down, it gets all the oxygen it needs from the water.
I have ben pouring my LC, but I’m not the person to ask on it specifically

I misspoke for lc just use a capped media bottle. The above comment was referring to grain jar lids.

The cap is screwed tight after inoculation with tiny agar myc.
As the media bottles aren´t full with LC to the rim, there´s plenty of air inside,
no gas exchange needed.
That´s for short term use,
if you plan to use your LC later, you better have a filter for gas exchange.
F.e. a 500ml bottle i´d fill with 200ml LC max.
I pour to grain jars, just eyeballing the amount,
a little more or less doesn´t matter.
Erlenmayer flasks are the best to me for pouring,
but standard media bottles do the trick also.

In the end one should know, if LC is necessary.
If you just do some tubs now and then,
i´d strongly advise on grain-to-grain inoculation.
Saves some time, and i´m sure the myc jumps over way better than from LC.

Thanks Dudes! Those media bottles seem pretty awesome, as they have those drip free pouring rings. I'm also intrigued about using erlenmeyers - seems like you could bung it up and call it good. Assuming there isn't enough pressure created to shoot the bung off. Could possibly use a homebrew airlock for gas exchange.

Are you doing the free pours in front of a flowhood or in SAB?

Never had the need for a hood, everything in SAB.

Don’t bung it, just put foil over the top of the flask.

I'm in deep love with these.
Pouring plates is just fun.

Screw top erlenmeyer - that's an elegant solution. You get the benefit of stir-bar compatible flat bottom and the ability to use drip free pour rings. Love it!

Nice, it really is like making a homebrew yeast starter. Just way lower gravity. I plan to save some unhopped wort from brew day, then dilute to the appropriate gravity for agar and LC. No malt extract needed!

That would be 1.008 OG for 2% plates and 1.001 OG for 0,2% LC :strokebeard:
