Putting holes in your lids (WBS)
    #3867236 - 03/04/05 12:28 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

For anyone who has worked with WBS, you are well aware of the need for a 3/8" hole in the lid of the jar.

Many of us pull out the drill, get the 3/8" bit, lay the lid down on a piece of wood, and proceed to do damage to our fingers as the bit catches the lid

I have found an easy way to put a perfect 3/8" hole in the lid with out the need of band-aids!

Go to your local hardware store and buy a 3/8" grommet set. They are used to put the medal rings (grommets) in tarps. The set runs 8$ and comes with a 3/8" hole punch made of hardened steel. Lay the lid on the block of wood provided in the set, place hole punch on lid, and hit it with a hammer! It punches through the lid with out a problem.

Using this method I punched 24 lids in less than 5 min! Every one was perfect.

Give it a try and save your fingers.

I dont use a hammer with the screwdriver. Just stab it twice with the screwdriver hard and quick. I can do a jar in about 10 seconds, including picking it up and putting it down.

Sorry everyones kinda bashing (not relaly but yanno) your idea..its just I dont think most had a problem like you describe. I think most people drill the lids while on the jars, not on a peice of wood. Just leave them all in the box the dozen jars comes in and zip out 24 holes without removing the lids.

Drill the lids in place on the jars, I've never had a problem doing this.

I've done that & it always resulted in the rye/wbs jars getting a bit dry near the end of the colonization cycle. Which can lead to stalls in the last bit of colonization:mad2:

That leaves some ragged sharp edged metal on the underside of the lid, which can poke a tiny hole in the tyvek, if you are not careful.

Some smart vendor should just have round flat PC proof plastic plates made about a 1/16th of an inch thick, the size of a canning jar metal lid, with a hole pre/drilled, covered with a perminant filter over it, along with an resealing injection port in the same lid. Don't know why someone hasn't done it. No big deal to have an injection mold place whip out a few thousand, in a heartbeat. Lots of folks would buy them by the dozen, if they were fairly inexpensive.

Yeah I know bro...I know.
Maybe Lana will get smart and sell some.

I like quality over ease of making cheap lids.
Something that lasts and doesn't rust also.

Im sorry, I know this post is old....  BUT is the OP serious?  Maybe its cause Im a carpenter, but I have never had problems drilling holes in my lids.  I just made 12 lids with no problem at all.

Here is my "secret"  lay the lids on a piece of wood, one at a time.  Put a lot of pressure on the lid with your fingers (not around the edges)  SET your drill on where you want to make the hole.  Pull the trigger down all the way on the drill (full speed) BUT dont put any pressure on the lid, let the weight of the drill do the work.  It takes a little longer, but if you do it this way, it dont catch and spin the lid at all.  The other big plus is that you dont have burs to hammer down and paint, or sand off.

Works perfectly everytime.  Then put little dabs of rustolium paint on the edge of the holes.  You can buy a "touch up" rustolium bottle for like 3 bucks at wal mart.
