Are my trips unusual? * 3
    #29658494 -

I'm pretty new to mushroom and my trips seem to be different than all the trips I have heard or read about. I just wanted to put this out there to see if others relate or might have input about this.

I'm 45 years old and just found out that mushrooms don't fry your brain like I was told in school. :frown: I've only tripped about 7-8 times with Golden Teacher mushrooms. .5g, 1g, 2g, 3g and 4g trips. I don't see color or shapes or get any visuals at all, with eyes open or closed. I have aphantasia and literally can't see ANYTHING when I try to imagine something, so I'm guessing that might have something to do with no having visuals while on mushrooms.

The more mushrooms I take the worse I tend to feel. On 4g I couldn't really stand up without passing out. And laying down was a pain in the butt too. It felt like my body was shutting down and I was going to physically die. It was not fun at all.

But 2g trips are a completely different story. It seems like the sweet spot for me. They seems pretty consistent in the way they effect me. And I don't feel like I'm going to die or pass out.

This is what happens. I take 2g and wait 30-60mins. I start to get very tired, so tired I have trouble sitting in a chair. I have to lay down.

I put some headphones on and listen to some calming binaural beats. So far this doesn't really do anything.

But if I lay there, close my eyes and just focus on the music, that's when the magic happens. I only need to focus on the music for about 10 seconds. Then I notice that "things" start to disappear. First I can't feel my body. Then I can't hear anything, then I don't feel like I'm not in my body at all. It feels like I have left my body, but without actually seeing anything. Like I'm not in the earth realm anymore.?

Then I'm in, for lack of a better word, a black void. There is literally nothing there, I see nothing and feel nothing. But that's where things start happening. I will get a visual scene, a still image. But I will get all kinds of understanding and feelings and knowledge. A few times I have seen a scene from the past and knows that it was me, from a different life. I was show myself and my wife, living in a hut on the water and I was repairing the "dock". I know all about this person, that it was me, all the feeling and the whole life "I" had lived. This didn't even seem like a place on earth, I'm not sure. But I don't really believe in having more than one life on earth. I'm actually just not really sure. But I'm starting to believe it might be real.

Sometimes it seems like being are talking to me and telling me things. But when I wake up from this, I don't really remember any of it. But it's mind blowing. I remember just saying "Holy Shit" for like an hour in my head. I didn't know what else to say, it was just so crazy.

This happens for about 5 - 10 minutes and then I wake up. But I can just do it all over again.

Once I felt like God was hugging me for 5 minutes and then I woke up. No visuals at all and it's hard to explain.

Sometimes I feel like I'm just floating in the void, the one and only being in all of existence. Just floating there for all of eternity. Then I thought, what if earth was all just a thought that I had, as I was floating through the void. Nothing more, just a fleeting thought. It was very sad, thinking that all of earth was just a thought in my head. I wanted it to be a "real" experience and I wanted to go back to earth. Then I wake up.

Sometimes I get asked a simple question. Like it's something to ponder or answer to myself.

Recently I was in the void and was shown a large tube that was vertical. It went up and down for infinity. On this tube were scenes of life, not sure if they were mine or someone else's, but I think it was my life. The scene was paused and the scene above and below were 1 frame different. But each scene was from a different time line, not the same "life". I was told, "If you could change something on your time line, would you?". I knew that all I had to do was choose a new scene and pick that as my life. And I thought about this and what it would mean. If I changed something, what would the results be? I started to think about what live would be like if I changed something and what I would be missing out on (relational stuff, not objects). This started to freak me out and I chose to not change anything but go back to my same life. But then I thought, if I did pick a different time line I wouldn't even know it when I wake up. So then I woke up and was worried that I actually DID pick a new time line and I just didn't remember. I was thinking, "Great, what the hell did I change, is everything still the same". This took a while to go away. Still not totally sure I didn't pick a new time line.

These kind of experiences really trip out my mind. I don't know what to think about it. I come back with memories of a different life, or seeing different time line and I don't believe in those thing, but they seem super real. It really throws me for a loop and is changing the way I look and thing about things. Not in a bad way, just very interesting.

This all is VERY exhausting for me. Each little experience it very draining, but I keep doing it because I want to know what else is out there. Afterwards I'm exhausted but have trouble sleeping at night. I also feel very depressed and I feel this way for a few days afterwards. I keep hearing of other peoples trips and how they feel great during the trips and even better the next day. But I get depressed for days. And yet I want to trip again about 4 days later but I know it's going to use so much of my already low energy. But I keep doing it because I want to see what else I can learn or experience in this void.

Are my trips unusual? Or are trips like this just not talked about very much because they are not as glamorous. I would love to know more about this and if others experience this and might have some input.

It sounds like you are having an actual spiritual experience, which I believe is what the mushrooms are intended for.  Your experiences are incredible and fascinating.  I would continue to explore and see what all you can experience with the mushrooms.  I would keep your dosage right around 2g, and just keep doing what you already have been doing.

As for feeling depressed afterwards, any mind altering substance or drug you take is gonna deplete your brain or vital endorphins and neurotransmitters.  It honestly wouldn't hurt to research what supplements to take after a mushroom trip and take those for a few days every time you trip.  You could also be tripping too often.  Some people can go multiple times a week, some can go multiple times a a months, some can do once or twice a month.  Maybe space your trips out more and start taking supplements to replenish your brain's natural juices.

Thanks for the reply, it helps out. Yeah, the experiences are some crazy spiritual experiences for sure. Mind blowing in the best way possible.

I have been taking some supplements to help with some stuff. I even got some blood work done to test some things. Everything came out great.

It doesn't seem to matter how long I wait between trips, it's just exhausting. But that's ok too. It's an intense experience so I'm not surprised it's exhausting too. Luckily I have the time and ability to do this, without interfering with "life".

I don't really plan on stopping anytime soon. I want to know more and learn more and will probably just stick with 2g. It seems to work great for me. As long as I can have these experiences, I will be doing mushrooms. If the spiritual experiences stop, then so do I.

i think ive yet to read someone's experience with shrooms that i could say was relatively unusual. the point is to be unusual! it draws from you and all of your experience and nobody really feels it exactly the same way.

what stands out to me about your post is that you say you have aphantasia, but were able to have a visualization of an alternate life. was this out of the ordinary for you? or am i misunderstanding something about aphantasia (i have hyperphantasia, aphantasia is an alien concept to me)

it's not abnormal to feel vaguely sad after. shrooms are a burden on our serotonin receptors, not to mention the experience can be poignant, and it sounds like yours were. even happy trips can have rough afterglows. i'm glad youre nonetheless finding the exploration fulfilling and that you found your sweet spot for dosage. i normally hover around the 2g mark myself.

take care, and welcome to the shroomery

First, the one thing I can say with absolute authority is that Earth is not just a thought in your head. I know this from direct experience of my conscious agency, which generates thoughts dissociated entirely from your own cognition.

The catch, of course, is that you have to take my word for it.

As for post-trip depression, I found it to be especially vexing after my first half-dozen shroom experiences. Maybe it was because I was being cautious and taking smaller doses, or maybe it was down to my brain needing to adjust to being subjected to a psychedelic.

I do still sometimes succumb to an unfocused melancholy on the comedown or immediately after a trip. But attempts to "think it through" and identify the root of the problem never works. Then last year I discovered (or rediscovered) the fix: don't think—meditate. I sit open-eyed and practice "just sitting" (called Shikantaza in the Soto Zen tradition), but there are many modes of meditation that I'm sure would work. After 20 or 30 minutes the noise in my head ebbs significantly, and a deep tranquility takes hold. This works even after a rough (not to say bad) trip, when the nerves feel especially frayed and an existential coldness feels to have burrowed into the viscera. After 45 minutes I'm in the clear.

And actually I've recently come to the conclusion that the entire day after a shroom trip really needs to be left open for introspection and contemplation. I find that driving around grocery shopping and doing other errands makes me inordinately irritable. My mind wants to further explore the insights and divergent cognition of yesterday's shroom trip, and not immediately snap back into conformity with the templates and patterns of "normal" existence.

Its my experience that i read back also quite often, that too much = increasingly uncomfortable.

To me, with my high sensitivity to psychedelics and anxiety (because of vivid traumatic stuff I been through) mushrooms are dysphoric by default unless I manage to flip it around. I’m preprogrammed to have a really bad time on psychedelics - which is why I don’t take them anymore, and why i had much more success with dissociatives than with psychedelics.

It seems very interesting to me that basically every person has a different trip, at least in one way or another. For some reason this intrigue me.

I don't think it's weird that I had visions while in the void even though I have aphantasia. When I'm in the void it kind of has a feeling of a dream like state, although much different too. And I have normal dreams with visuals and everything. So the visuals I get while tripping and in the void fall into the "dream" visual category. At least that's my way of describing it or understanding it. But with my brain fully "working", I can't imagine anything.

My aphantasia, I literally can't see anything with my eyes close while trying to imagine something. If I have my eyes closed and you say, imagine a horse. It's just blackness for me. Like trying to view a picture of a horse on google images, but your monitor is turned off. All you will ever see is just a black screen. Hyperphantasia sounds insane to me, very cool, but maybe distracting too. But I guess each person learns to adapt to the way they are.

Yeah, I take it VERY easy for 2 - 3 days after a trip, I can't do much and don't really want to. And that's ok. They are recovery days. I'm good with that.

I have yet to try other substances, only mushrooms for now. Who knows that the future will hold. But I do really really enjoy the spiritual experiences I get on mushroom. It's completely out of this world.

yeah its not like smoking a joint where you can tell what sort of time youre in for. even 2 sessions of 2g from the same flush of shrooms can be wildly different. its an extremely variable drug

thanks for the insight about aphantasia!

My wife has aphantasia, but funnily enough when she sampled some of my medical marijuana a few years ago she had vivid closed-eye visuals of red ants!

People who don't have aphantasia aren't actually seeing things like it's through their eyes. At least for me, when I visualize something it's completely separate from what my eyes see and it does not make a difference if my eyes are open or not.

It's fascinating that you dream normally, intuitively to me it feels like that would be affected. I don't understand how anyone functions with aphantasia, I feel like so many tasks would be so much harder if I couldn't visualize anything

normally when my eyes are open this is how it works for me, but when they are closed, or if they are open and i am straight up tranced the fuck out, it can be as vivid as if they are open.

during hypnagogia my mind rapid fires vivid imagery at me straight from the subconscious and its like cards appearing in front of my face. its another well of creativity for me. even though i know it all came from within me, it feels external to the point where i feel like im plagiarizing myself.

I'm in a similar age bracket, and I think you've done a good job of capturing some of the essence of tripping in your description. The elements of the trip you are talking about are quite hard to describe coherently, or can be difficult to remember in detail from a strong trip, and often get glossed over with a phrase like "and it was really crazy." It can be easier to talk about specific visuals to give a flavour of the trip, which might make it sound like the experience is primarily visual. To get a good description of a trip which focuses on the non-visual elements is interesting.

I find that my visuals on mushrooms are more prominent in the period leading up to the peak of the trip, after which the experience has more of an inward character. It feels like there is some underlying theme, story, or message to the trip. I've referred to this in the past as the difference between visuals and visions. Closed-eye visuals are the classic "TV set behind my eyelids" type of visuals. In my experience, these CEV are much more vibrant than typical "mind's eye" imagery.

When I see comments from people with aphantasia along the lines of "it must be nice to be able to visualize things like you're watching HD TV" it seems like the idea they have of the "mind's eye" is actually closer to a closed-eye-visual. CEV can be like the classic 3D animated psychedelic imagery you find on YouTube, but it can sometimes be a bit like a TV where you can't choose the channel. I've got notes in my trip journals referring to oddly specific visuals like faded 1970s toothpaste commercials... or sometimes I get what appear to be credits scrolling. Some scenes have a feeling of significance or foreboding, or seem very alien, other scenes in my CEV can be completely random or pointless (like a tellytubby floating inside a room, surrounded by silver balls).

:owl:

What I mean by "visionary" imagery is closer to my normal "mind's eye" when I'm sober, except that I have much less control over what I'm seeing. It's less visually spectacular and vibrant than typical "visuals" but can convey a much greater sense of meaning and significance, like I'm watching a story unfold that's taking place in a different reality.

Your phrase "memories of a different life" fits in with this kind of dreamlike visionary imagery. It's sometimes like watching scenes from a film, but they feel like something that exists in a different reality... this is kind of what the idea of a "trip" is about. You can be very clearly sat in your room, the visuals have mostly faded away, but you're in a kind of trance where you're deep inside the trip, as if it's a whole other reality taking place in some parallel existence.

Then you add the more overtly spiritual or mystical experiences on top... it's not surprising if it tires you out. I don't feel depressed after my trips, but a heavy dose can sometimes feel like I've been on an epic Lord-of-the-Rings style quest (but with aliens) to get back to where I started, with the trip making less and less sense as I sober up. The "body load" from higher doses can be quite unpleasant during the most intense part of the trip - it might seem logical for a psychedelic drug to be "all in your head" but it can feel very physical, like the trip is "coming in sideways" like a tsunami, or pressing down on you from above.

:peak:

I'm wondering if you can recall the dreamlike imagery from the trips itself, like the large tube or the scenes from your other life? Or do you just remember them like a verbal report of what the images were about? In my mind's eye imagery, an image I saw or a dream I had is a lot less vivid compared to seeing it directly. To get an idea of my typical "mind's eye" imagery, I would describe it as a bit like watching a YouTube video on your monitor that takes up maybe two thirds of the screen, but while you watch it you have to focus your eyes on a point about an inch to the right of where the picture ends. You can still see it, but you don't get the sharpness of being able to actually focus on it like you would a real image. Imagining a naked girl is not quite the same as watching porn, even with years of practice

I find that on lighter doses (or when I have tolerance) the closed-eye-visuals sometimes feel like they are there, but I can't quite see them, if that makes sense (OK maybe it doesn't). In some of these trips I can sort of "de-focus" from the typical place I would expect to see closed-eye-visuals - the TV screen on the back of my eyelids - and instead the visuals appear more in my mind's eye. If you can get dreamlike visual imagery on shrooms, I wonder if you might be able to get some visuals bleeding in like this, depending on the dose. It's a slightly odd feeling because it's like having visuals within a "visual field" that I can't quite place. If I had to place my "mind's eye" in relation to my normal visual field, I would say it's a kind of "up and to the right" experience, similar to the example of watching a YouTube video I can't fully focus on, but it's something that isn't literally "seen" in front of me and works the same way with eyes open or closed.

Even without taking aphantasia into account, I think there's a spectrum of vividness that people experience with mental imagery, and the same also applies to the kind of visuals that people get on mushrooms. It also varies with the dose and from trip to trip... sometimes I feel like mushrooms visuals (especially open-eye visuals) are kind of subtle, and then on my next trip the whole room is rearranging itself before my eyes - with the craziness of the visuals often being greater in my peripheral vision than when I look at things directly.

I'm starting to believe it might be real.

This is one of the facinating things about tripping; the moment when the experience shifts from being "I took a drug and it's all in my head" and slides into what feels like a parallel reality or something supernatural. I've had a lot of trips with a kind of alien theme. When I'm talking about it now, it just seems like something fun and kind of cool, like inhabiting a sci-fi movie during my trip. But if I take a large dose, that feeling can quickly shift to an ominous sense that MY TRIPS WERE REAL ALL ALONG and that the psychedelics have erased a boundary separating me from Lovecraftian horrors that can get to me through the trip. That's a paranoid delusion... after the peak of a large dose this can switch into a grandiose delusion. I am on a mission to save the world. I have special powers. I am God. The insanity is only limited by the dose and my febrile imagination. So I try not to go overboard with the dosing, and adopt a kind of "what happens in the trip, stays in the trip" attitude - I don't dismiss everything out of hand, but over time the "noise" of specific revelations of this or that trip contradict each other and cancel out to some extent, leaving behind the core of the mystical experience itself. :peace:

I didn't intend my post to get this long, but it's interesting to talk about some of the weird details of the psychedelic experience...

That sounds really wild. I looked up hyperphantasia yesterday. It can involve any or all of the senses.

My visualization ability is probably in the normal range, but like TheGourdLord said it's not like seeing with the eyes, and I can visualize something just about as well with eyes open as closed. It's seeing without seeing, and hard to describe—which is why I can't really figure out where on the scale I'm on (0=aphantasia, 5=hyperphantasia). What does it mean to be able to visualize an apple like it's "right in front of you"? That sounds like a visual hallucination.

However, in a hypnagogic state I can experience "inner eye imagery" that seems as vivid as a dream. I'm definitely not asleep (or else I'm succumbing to "microsleeps"), but elaborate scenes unfold while I'm lying in bed trying to sleep. I get the same with shrooms at certain points during a trip, only stronger and with eyes not necessarily closed. Maybe it's my best hint of what hyperphantasia is like.

Yeah, for those wondering. Aphantasia is a spectrum. It's not all or nothing. And it really doesn't make life any harder, just different. You learn to adapt. And I'm a designer and inventor for a living. LOL

Now that you said something. I CAN visualize the images that I saw while tripping. Like the tube with the scenes on it. It's obviously not as vivid as when tripping, but I can still "see" it when I think about it. I can see all the other images and scenes that I have had while tripping too. It's like remembering a dream that I just had, just much stronger. These are basically the only things that I can remember and visualize in my head. It kind of weirds me out.

This is all very interesting stuff and I don't know what to make of most of it. It's confusing and intriguing at the same time. I'm not sure if they are "real" experiences or just things going on in my brain or whatever. But from other spiritual experiences I have had, completely sober, I'm thinking that half the things I have experiences while tripping are real. I think the mushrooms temporarily "shut off" parts of the brain that allow me to fully be on earth. And this can give me temporary access to another place (but not full access).

After one trip I also felt like I went on an "epic Lord-of-the-Rings style quest" too. I said, it felt like I just acted out 3 full movies and they were EPIC. I didn't know how to describe it. But I couldn't remember any of it. I just know it happened. It was wild.

I had a lengthy discussion with my wife about her aphantasia last night. I asked her how she is able to remember and describe the details of a bird she saw a day ago, or some scene from her childhood. So as it turns out, she can call up a mental image of an object or event stored in memory (including dream imagery); she just can't imagine (i.e. fantasize) a fictional image. And yet she has a perfectly active imagination!

She also didn't know that how her mind works was "unusual" until last year, when she first heard of aphantasia (a term coined less than two decades ago). She always thought, since childhood, that when someone spoke of picturing something in their mind, like a pink elephant, it was meant in some metaphorical sense, and not literally. Nonetheless, if you were to ask her to draw a pink elephant, she would do so with no problem.

So somehow those with aphantasia are "doing imagination" in a different way. I suspect they have some specialized ability that substitutes for mental visualization which those without aphantasia lack.

As for what shrooms do, I think they weaken or dissolve dissociative barriers in the mind, allowing one to gain access to parts of themselves or the external world that they otherwise don't have.

Yes, this describes my exactly. I learned about aphantasia a year ago. And you are right, I can imagine things that I have experienced, but not very well at all. Creating something new in my mind, like a pink elephant is literally impossible. But like you said, I have work arounds that make living in this world just as easy. I too always thought that when people said, "imagine so and so in your head" that it was metaphorical. I had no idea that people could actually do that. So weird to me.
