Has this ever happened to anyone else's dried mushrooms before?

Was checking on my supply and was disappointed to see my filled to brim jar of 2 year old allenii turned to dust... seems like there are some sort of mite infestation in there or something. How long can you store these things? They were dehydrated to a crisp before storage. Bummer.

If mites were able to live in that jar it must have held too high humidity, i.e. either the mushrooms were not properly dried or the jar wasn't properly sealed.

How did it smell?

Curiously enough I discovered living springtails in a year old jar of dried liberty caps, but the mushrooms were still intact (and still highly potent).

Smells like dusty ass allenii lol.. were in jar with supposedly airtight lid with medical grade desiccants, weird. Maybe I'll try vacuum sealing for long term storage?

I’ve had jars for several years and have never had this issue with any. I’ve also vacuum sealed and haven’t had any issues. I prefer jars because you can easily open them up and grab a few mushrooms and then reseal it. To me, I’d only vacuum seal if I wanted really long term storage. Either way, it’s pretty crazy that  jar mushrooms just turned to dust though.

I guess as far as storing organic material goes, we should probably be prepared for such things. :shrug:

I mean bread goes moldy, I've had beetles in my cupboards... I guess it's just nature playing along.

Yah the sheer volume difference was shocking, guess they're all fluff wet and dry lol.  Had to pay the mushroom tax :usflag:
