Sandwich fruiting technique?
    #29656319 -

I saw a post on another forum advocating for a sandwich fruiting technique - half the sub on bottom, spawn in the middle, remainder of sub on top. The post claimed this facilitated faster colonization of the sub, in addition to some other stuff I glossed over.

I’m generally in favor of sticking with what is proven to work, but I’m curious if anyone uses this tek.

Everything thats thrown together/
Grows together/

That being said,

Its like one giant inoculation point thats taking over 2 fertile fields

and once it becomes homogeneous, give it lots of air and humidity and watch it fruit

:whathesaid:

If you have clean, fully colonized grain spawn, you can kinda just do whatever and it'll work.

Some people like sandwiches, others prefer stir fry.

Sure it works though at the same time in my experience has a higher contam rate because more grains are closer to the surface.

(Not proven just personal opinion based on what little experience I got)

Yeah I don't think that's a thing. Contams at this stage have been in your grain the whole time. How does grains being closer to the surface promote contamination?

My logic being if there's all grains and none in the bottom then there's obviously more grains closer to the surface.

Lwk it doesn't matter as long as there's a pseudo casing or casing /no exposed grains on surface and ur kinda right about fully colonized grains being good to go eather way though idk.

Id rather think it could potently slightly increàs contams than think it doesn't and be over protective.

XD I mean I don't see any bonus to laying grains in the center and can think of a few benifits of spreading grains from mid to bottom the first and easiest would be more inoculation points 😅

I think maybe if the grains are exposed I suppose it’s possible. Only because sometimes when you mix it up or shake it, it almost looks like the mycelium gets wiped off the majority of the grain surface before it bounces back. Even then clean spawn should be able to withstand that anyway

There are a lot of successful cultivators who don't pseudo case at all. Spreading grains from middle to bottom IS a pseudo casing.

It may look like the mycelium is wiped off the grain but that's why we allow them to colonize fully. Inside the grain has mycelium too.

Yeah, and I really don't think it matters for truly clean spawn.

I've had situations where I was out of quart jars but unable to spawn the grain in them, transferred the grain to takeout containers just to free up the jar, then took too long to spawn the takeout containers. Ended up having to harvest fruits and pins from the surface before I could spawn them.

Wouldn't happen with bacterial spawn, though. In that case, they would have gone off and I would have considered them "expired."

I think we fall into a lot of different specific techniques just trying to manage bacterial spawn. (And don't get me wrong. I still end up making a ton of the stuff.) The problem, though, is that it's a total wildcard. Parameters that help get one batch of bacterial spawn to the finish line might completely fail on the next one. I've ultimately learned to just shrug, realize that it's gonna be a crap shoot, and make a mental note that maybe that particular culture line needs to be discontinued or cleaned up.

I mean isn't it better to have lots of inoculation points spread evenly over the substrate rather than just a layer?

That's definitely my go to method, however the sandwich still gets fruits, and people like the methods they prefer (creatures of habit and all)

It has been Proven that multiple innoc point is definitely faster, but there is a case to be made for how big the inoculation point is

I think what it is is people have a hard time mixing evenly to get a good canopy. Putting down a middle layer allows them to spread grain evenly across the tub.

:whathesaid:
Agreed, if you have clumps of grain spawn here and individual grain spawn pieces there, it will lead to sporadic/uneven pinning

Oh, boy.

I don't think this exactly counts as a technique, but I struggled for years to achieve uniform mixing without excessive work. Especially in the corners of the tub. Then realized that it's a lot easier to mix grain and substrate in a large mixing bowl, THEN dump it into the tub. At first I felt like it was pretty clever, then I felt pretty dumb for not thinking of it sooner. Also, spawning became a lot less cumbersome overall once I ditched liners.

But this, too, is definitely related to having cleaner spawn. When I was constantly fighting bacterial infections, I would have been too paranoid to use the same mixing bowl for multiple shoeboxes. But when things were clean enough to make that less of a concern, and I started doing this regularly, I also soon realized that a mildly bacterial quart won't necessarily transfer all its issues to a healthy one just because there was a little residue left over in the mixing bowl.

I mix in a clear plastic waste can liner. I can visually assess the thoroughness of the mixing efforts. I avoid mixing in the tub just because of the corners.

I use an oven baking bag to mix. Very easy to tell how well the grains are distributed in the substrate.
