First attempt using a grow kit

Honored Ladies and Gentlemen,


this is my very first attempt of growing shrooms on my own. I have never tried till now, but, after studying some publications regarding the benefits, I decided to give microdosing a try.

So I bought a grow kit for Psilocybe Cubensis and started the process a two weeks ago with Step 1 - Injecting the spores (as the flyer in the box puts it).

Currently my grow looks like this after two weeks:




According to the flyer, it can take up to 4 weeks, till the mycelium grows over (nearly) all the grains. After that, Step 2 - Preparing the cultivation box follows.

I am going to show you the progress. Since I am a total beginner (at least in the great domain of growing shrooms - see my user name), any advice is welcome.

It's a good idea to edit the vendor info out of your post, not supposed to include that type of thing.

The myc generally looks healthy but this spot at the bottom is concerning:



If that's a bunch of cloudy yellow water, probably bacteria. Not a guaranteed death sentence, but avoid doing anything like a break and shake, or rolling the bag over, to avoid distributing it elsewhere.

If that's just the plastic trim of the bottom of the bag at a weird angle, then you're in good shape.

Well, maybe we should wait for a better picture before a final decision on a break&shake, but then again, better to find out now then waiting another 3 weeks, spawn it to a tub and then watch it shit the bed right :strokebeard:

Since Ras might have seen something I didn't, take some pictures of the spot he singled out and we'll see what's next. Save your sanitizer for the injection port and the gloves for when you spawn the bag to avoid coir under your fingernails, non are needed for a break&shake :rockon:

I think it was the plastic bag from a strange angle.




I could not see any fluid, but sometimes the grains shine through the mycelium and that looks yellowish.

Phase two of my grow project has arrived.

The mycelium has covered all the grains, so I had to break it up and put it into the cultivation box. Over the mycelium covered grains I have placed a layer of vermiculite, as instructed in the documentation of the grow kit.

On this occasion I bought a big closable plastic box. Till now, I have kept the mushbag in a shoe box. Since the mushbag was sterile inside and had a good air filter, I could have kept it anywhere.

But transferring the mycelium covered grains into the cultivation box required maximum cleanliness. And I cannot disinfect a shoe box made of cardboard.

So I have disinfected the new plastic box (inside and outside) and also the table, where intended to work, closed all doors and windows, put on a surgical mask and some rubber gloves (and rubbed them with disinfectant). I have put the mushbag in the box, opened it with a pair of disinfected scissors, transferred the content into the cultivation box, put the layer of vermiculite on the top and closed it.



Now I am waiting for the mycelium to penetrate the vermiculite. According to the supplier that should take about a week.

I am going to keep you up to date.

You've got bacterial grains, it's not the worst I've seen tho by a long shot.

Hi john.weeder.420,

Pardon me, but I don't really get your process.

From my humble perspective, I think you could have made much better use of your colonized grain.

For example, by mixing it with Coco Coir (at your desired ratio) so the mycelium has the necessary moisture reserves to fruit to its full potential. Then putting it into shoeboxes, monotubs, EZ Dial tubs (or whatever tubs you prefer).

The 'shoeboxes' the community refers to ARE NOT CARDBOARD BOXES. They are plastic tubs with lids (modified or unmodified) that serve as containers for the colonized substrate and as the fruiting chamber at the same time.

I would definitely advise you use coir when comnbining any grains + sub/ spawning. I know it says verm, and I ususally recommend people with AIOs or kits follow instructions and pray, but in kits like this if you buy one again, the verm is useless. The market cares about getting your money, not whether you actually get mnushrooms. kwim?

We don't ever worry about that level of cleanliness in cultivation when spawning, ever. If the spawn is clean, it will do fine. There are no nutrients in coir itself for microbes to grow, or verm.

If it hasnt been long since you spawned it you can mix with coir, I would say you have a better chance of actually getting the mushrooms if you give it a reservoir of water, which iw what mycelium needs to grow apart form a nutrient source (grains). Youc an just compact a layer oc oir gently on top.
By adding coir, youre giving them a healthy drink and they will grow well, but it cant contam just because of spawning, unless the grains in the bag were dirty to begin with. No need to disinfect the box or take any of those precaustions you outlined, theyre completely useless. It's just wet dirt. Otherwise it will jsut fruit directly from the grains but can easily dry out and fail, we always use a substrate, and verm alone is not enough.
I know your main goal atm is to salvage this grow.

thank you for your comments and advice.

Yes, I am following the instruction of the grow kit. Since this is the first time I try to grow shrooms and (at the moment) I have only access to this kind of grow kits, I do not see any other possibility at the moment.

For experienced growers all this steps might be confusing, together with the terminology I am using. Please give me some time -- a couple of grows and your comments will help me brush up my vocabulary and growing knowledge.

I am on the Way (so to say).

I was literally keeping the mushbag in a shoe box made of cardboard. According to the instructions of the grow kit, I had to keep it somewhere warm and dark.

The instructions emphasized cleanliness very much. I still might have overdone it. This will wear out with time.

Welcome to the shroomery John.weeder.420

All the steps you have followed as per the instructions on your kit will give you mushrooms. Keep following them because they will work.

Once you have harvested your first set of mushrooms (called a flush) from the kit, it will give you confidence and experience.

With that experience under your belt, you will likely want to make your own kit from scratch (which is how we do it).

Im sure as you have noticed we have our own terminology here and generally do things the way our most trusted cultivators do things (because they work really well)

When you are ready, we will point you in the right direction to setting up your own kit. Until then keep up the good work and feel free to ask us any Questions

General cleanliness is absolutely important in this hobby and there's nothing wrong with following the instructions, as long as the point on clean spawn/non-nutrient substrates are considered. If anything you are just developing good habits.
